Enugu Govt Debunks Report Claiming Ette Community Was Ceded to Kogi State

The Enugu State Government has dismissed as false and misleading an online report claiming that the National Boundary Commission (NBC) has ceded Ette community in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area to neighbouring Kogi State.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Secretary of the Enugu State Boundary Committee, Dr Solomon Ejim, assured residents of Ette community, Igbo-Eze North LGA and Enugu State at large that no such decision has been taken by the NBC regarding the long-standing interstate boundary dispute.

“The attention of the Enugu State Government has been drawn to a fake and misleading online report claiming that the National Boundary Commission (NBC) has made a decision on the age-long interstate boundary dispute between Enugu State and Kogi State to the effect that Ette community in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State has been administratively ceded to Kogi State,” the statement read.

It added emphatically: “The Enugu State Government wishes to state categorically that the report is fake.”

NBC Director-General Disowns Report

Akahi News gathered that the Enugu State Government formally contacted the Director-General of the National Boundary Commission, who reportedly disowned the publication and described it as outrightly false.

According to the statement, the NBC boss vehemently debunked the report, stressing that it did not emanate from the Commission and should be disregarded in its entirety.

Residents Urged to Remain Calm

Dr Ejim urged residents of Igbo-Eze North LGA and the wider Enugu State not to entertain fear or anxiety over the claim, describing it as the handiwork of mischief makers bent on causing unnecessary tension.

He enjoined the public to ignore the fake news and continue with their normal activities, noting that no resolution has been reached by the NBC on the boundary issue between Enugu and Kogi states.

Observers say boundary disputes are sensitive matters that require careful handling, and misinformation could easily escalate tensions if not promptly addressed.

Boundary Dispute Still Unresolved

According to reports reviewed by Akahi News, the Enugu–Kogi boundary dispute involving Ette community remains under the jurisdiction of the National Boundary Commission, which is the constitutionally recognised body responsible for such matters.

Analysts note that until an official report or decision is formally released by the NBC, any claims suggesting a final resolution should be treated with caution.

Call for Responsible Information Sharing

The Enugu State Government reiterated its commitment to protecting the territorial integrity of the state and called on the public to rely only on verified information from credible sources.

As misinformation continues to spread rapidly online, authorities have urged citizens to always cross-check sensitive claims, especially those capable of affecting peace and unity.
