Federal Medical Centre Abuja Issues Statement on Death of Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene
The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has released a detailed statement clarifying circumstances surrounding the death of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, who tragically passed away following a snake bite on January 31, 2026. The announcement comes amid widespread discussions and speculation on social media regarding the medical care provided.

Prompt Medical Response Emphasised
In the statement, Dr. Bioku Muftau, Head of Clinical Services at FMC Abuja, reassured the public that Ms. Nwagene received immediate and comprehensive medical attention upon arrival. According to Dr. Muftau, the medical team provided resuscitation, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and administered polyvalent snake antivenom without delay.
“After a thorough but rapid evaluation, it became evident that Ms. Nwagene was experiencing severe neurotoxic complications as a result of the snake bite,” Dr. Muftau explained. “Despite all efforts to stabilise her and transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for advanced care, she experienced sudden deterioration just before the transfer. Our team administered CPR and other life-saving interventions, but regrettably, we were unable to revive her.”
Refuting Social Media Claims
The Federal Medical Centre strongly rejected claims circulating online regarding the non-availability of antivenom and alleged delays in treatment. Dr. Muftau emphasised that such assertions are unfounded and do not reflect the professional care provided by the hospital staff.
“We stand by the quality of care and dedication our team demonstrates daily,” the statement read. “The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation. We are committed to transparency and integrity in our practices and will continue to pursue excellence in patient care.”
Call for Responsible Information Sharing
The medical centre urged the public to rely on credible sources for updates and to avoid speculation on social media, highlighting the importance of responsible information sharing in sensitive situations.
The hospital expressed its deepest condolences to the family of Ms. Nwagene, acknowledging the profound grief that accompanies the loss of a loved one.
“The FMC Abuja extends its deepest condolences to the Nwagene family during this incredibly difficult time,” Dr. Muftau stated. “Our thoughts remain with them as we continue to provide the highest standards of care to all patients.”
The full statement underscores FMC Abuja’s commitment to professionalism, transparency, and rapid response in handling medical emergencies, while addressing public concerns arising from social media narratives.
