Federal Ministry Wades into Badeggi FM Suspension, Urges Calm and Due Process
In response to mounting concerns over the recent suspension of Badeggi FM, a radio station based in Minna, the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation has issued a measured statement urging due process, while reiterating the legal authority of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in such matters.

The controversy stems from a directive reportedly issued by the Governor of Niger State, His Excellency Mohammed Umaru Bago, during an expanded All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus Meeting held in Minna on August 1. Governor Bago is said to have ordered the suspension of Badeggi FM’s operations, citing allegations of unethical broadcasting and incitement against the state government. Notably, the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation was present at the said meeting.
In an official statement released on Saturday by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister, the Ministry acknowledged the concerns voiced by media stakeholders across the country. The statement, however, clarified that the authority to suspend or revoke broadcasting licences is solely vested in the National Broadcasting Commission as established by federal law.
“The Ministry welcomes the decision of the Niger State Government to formally report the perceived ‘unethical behaviour’ of Badeggi FM to the NBC for resolution,” the statement read. It further assured the public and all concerned parties that the NBC possesses the institutional framework and legal backing to investigate and adjudicate broadcasting-related infractions fairly and impartially.
The Minister also appealed for calm, noting that the sanctity of press freedom must be balanced with the responsibility of media practitioners to uphold ethical standards. “We urge all stakeholders to allow the NBC to handle the matter professionally and in line with its regulatory mandate,” the statement concluded.
The case is expected to draw significant attention from journalists, civil society, and free speech advocates as it unfolds, particularly in the context of the enduring tension between government accountability and media freedom.
