Five RSU Students Abducted in Rivers as Suspected Cultists Strike at 2:30am in Emohua Community
A fresh wave of fear and tension has gripped Rivers State following the midnight abduction of five students by suspected cultists in the Rumuche/Rumuohia community of Emohua Local Government Area. The incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday at about 2:30am, has reignited widespread concern over the safety of students living off-campus in high-risk areas.

According to information Akahi News gathered, a group of armed men, described as suspected cultists, invaded an isolated section of the Rumuche/Rumuohia community under the cover of darkness. The attackers reportedly opened fire briefly to cause panic before forcefully leading the five students away to an unknown destination.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, explained that security operatives received a distress call shortly after the attack.
“On 2nd December 2025 at about 0230hrs, a group of suspected cultists, numbering about five, attacked an isolated area in Rumuche/Rumuohia community, Emohua Local Government Area. The hoodlums shot and abducted five persons to an unknown destination,” parts of the statement read.
Security Authorities Launch Manhunt for Perpetrators
Akahi News learnt that the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, immediately mobilised a team of senior officers and tactical units to the scene for an on-the-spot assessment. The CP was said to have directed the area commander, joint task force operatives, and other special units to intensify search-and-rescue operations within and around the affected communities.
Newsmen present at the scene observed a heightened security presence, with patrol vehicles and armed operatives combing adjoining creeks, bushes and known hideouts in a bid to track down the abductors and secure the safe release of the victims.
The CP further reassured residents that every person linked to the crime would be apprehended and brought to justice, urging community members to remain calm and cooperate fully by volunteering credible information that could aid ongoing investigations.
Victims Believed to be RSU Students
Sources close to the matter informed Akahi News that the abducted victims are students of the Emohua satellite campus of Rivers State University (RSU). Although official confirmation from the university authorities was still being awaited at the time of filing this report, the development has sparked outrage among the student community.
Many students reportedly went into hiding or relocated temporarily to safer areas, while parents and guardians flooded phone lines in panic, trying to get updates about their loved ones.
This is not the first incident to raise alarm in the area. Only last week, students residing off-campus reportedly staged a protest over what they described as repeated cult-related attacks and security breaches in the surrounding communities. They appealed to the university management to relocate them to the main campus in Port Harcourt, citing the increasing threat to their lives.
Growing Concerns Over Campus Safety
Security analysts and observers have warned that persistent cult activities around learning institutions pose a serious danger to both students and residents. Akahi News gathered that calls are mounting for stronger collaboration between security agencies, school management, traditional rulers and community vigilantes to curb the rising rate of violent crimes in the area.
Stakeholders are also urging the state government to consider urgent intervention through increased security deployment, intelligence gathering and social intervention programmes aimed at discouraging youths from cult involvement.
As families of the victims anxiously await positive news, Rivers State remains on edge, with many hoping that the swift actions of the authorities will lead to a successful rescue operation.
