Five construction workers have been confirmed dead after a railway bridge under construction collapsed in Yancheng, eastern China, in an incident that has once again drawn attention to safety concerns surrounding large-scale infrastructure projects.
The collapse occurred around 5:46 pm on Monday at a construction site in Jiangsu Province, when a 95-metre section of the unfinished bridge reportedly gave way without warning while workers were present at the location.
Rescue Efforts and Casualties Confirmed
According to reports by state media, emergency services were immediately deployed to the scene, with municipal and county authorities coordinating rescue operations. Two workers were initially rescued from the wreckage but later died from injuries sustained in the collapse.

Akahi News learnt that the bodies of three workers who had been declared missing were recovered on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to five. Officials confirmed that rescue operations have since been concluded.
Images broadcast on state television showed twisted sections of the unfinished structure lying across the construction site as emergency crews and heavy machinery worked through the debris.
Project Background and Investigation
The incident reportedly involved the collapse of a tied-arch beam during construction of the Yuegang Bridge, a component of the Lianyungang–Shanghai railway line. The project is being handled by China Railway 12th Bureau Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the state-owned China Railway Construction Corporation Limited.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the structural failure, although no official findings have been released at the time of filing this report.
The railway line forms part of China’s expanding high-speed rail network, aimed at improving transport links between northern Jiangsu and Shanghai, one of the country’s major economic centres.
Safety Concerns Around Infrastructure Projects
The tragedy adds to a series of fatal incidents linked to major construction and railway projects in China in recent years. Observers note that while the country’s infrastructure expansion has significantly improved connectivity, safety oversight during large-scale construction remains a recurring concern following previous accidents involving worker fatalities.
Analysts say investigations into such incidents often focus on engineering standards, construction processes, and on-site safety compliance to prevent future occurrences.
As authorities continue their investigation, the latest collapse highlights the risks associated with rapid infrastructure development and the importance of strict safety enforcement in construction environments. Further details are expected once officials conclude technical assessments of the site.
