Former Chelsea Midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka Signs Permanent Deal with Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund have secured the permanent signing of former Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, with the 21-year-old putting pen to paper on a contract running until 2030 on Tuesday, August 26.

Chukwuemeka joins the Bundesliga side for a reported fee of €25 million ($29 million) after spending the second half of last season on loan at Dortmund. During his loan spell, he made 17 appearances across all competitions, scoring once and contributing to Dortmund’s run to the Club World Cup quarter-finals, despite battling injury setbacks.

Expressing his excitement about the permanent move, Chukwuemeka said, “I am happy Borussia Dortmund is now my footballing home. I will give everything to make sure we achieve our goals as a team.”

Born in Austria and raised in England, Chukwuemeka progressed through Aston Villa’s academy before joining Chelsea in 2022. Known for his technical ability and vision, he has long been regarded as one of England’s brightest midfield prospects.

Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken welcomed the acquisition, stating, “We are delighted to sign Carney Chukwuemeka, who further increases the quality and creativity of our attacking midfield.”

The signing adds to Dortmund’s busy summer, which has already included the arrivals of Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland and Yan Couto from Manchester City. The club has also been linked with potential Premier League recruits, including Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino and Wolves forward Fabio Silva, while Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho has been tipped for a possible return.

Earlier on Tuesday, Dortmund also announced the extension of head coach Niko Kovac’s contract until 2027, providing stability as the club strengthens its squad ahead of the new season.
