From Cleaner to First-Class Graduate: Inspiring Story of Romoke Adunbarin Lasisi

A Nigerian lady, Romoke Adunbarin Lasisi, has shared her remarkable journey of rising from working as a cleaner to becoming a first-class graduate and budding data scientist.
Adunbarin graduated with first-class honours in Mathematics from the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, four years after her viral post in 2021 where she boldly defended her job as a cleaner. At the time, she revealed how a colleague questioned her confidence in posting photos of herself wearing a cleaner’s uniform.
“Colleague asked me how I feel comfortable posting with a cleaner’s uniform. Well, I told her it doesn’t matter. That won’t make people who don’t like me start liking me. Besides, that’s who I am presently but I won’t be forever,” she wrote in April 2021.
True to her words, Adunbarin secured admission to the University of Ilorin in September 2021 to study Mathematics. Alongside her studies, she pursued professional training in data analysis and data science, gaining valuable expertise that would shape her career path.
In a post on Saturday, August 16, 2025, she gave a glimpse of her progress, writing:
“First-Class Mathematics Graduate. Passionate Data Scientist. Volunteered Tutor for Data Analysis with Python in my department. Co-Founder & Volunteer Data Tutor at The Emerging Minds Foundation. Data Science Tutor at the CSA Africa Workshop, University of Nairobi.”
She added a note of encouragement, reflecting on her faith and resilience: “All I had was hope and the belief that with God, everything gets better with time.”
Her story has since inspired many Nigerians, especially young people facing economic and social challenges, proving that determination, faith, and hard work can rewrite anyone’s future.
