FUOYE Denies Vice-Chancellor’s Involvement in Arrest of SSANU Leaders
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
The management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has denied reports linking its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Fasina, to the arrest and detention of some leaders of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) on campus.

According to information obtained by Akahi News, the university described the allegation as “misleading and entirely baseless,” stressing that Professor Fasina was in Abuja on official duty at the time the police invited the union leaders.
Vice-Chancellor Was Away on Official Duty
A statement issued on Monday and made available to Akahi News clarified that the Vice-Chancellor was at the Nigerian Law School in Abuja for the accreditation of FUOYE’s law students when the police acted on a security report alleging plans by some SSANU members to disrupt his return to office on October 14, 2025, following a six-month accumulated leave.
The statement added that the police invited the union leaders on October 13 for questioning over the alleged security threat, but they claimed to be out of Ekiti State at the time.
Tensions Escalate on Campus
Akahi News gathered that when Professor Fasina resumed office, tension rose on campus as about ten SSANU members, led by Mr. Benjamin Faleye, allegedly disrupted a meeting with the university community and declared that the Vice-Chancellor “would not be allowed to work or walk freely around the university.”
The university’s security unit subsequently filed a report identifying the actions of the union leaders as a potential threat to peace on campus, leading to their invitation by the police.
A police source quoted by Akahi News confirmed that the union officials became unruly and uncooperative during questioning, which prompted their brief detention. The source emphasised that the invitation was routine and part of efforts to maintain public order, insisting that “no individual is above the law.”
VC Intervened for Their Release
Contrary to allegations made by SSANU, the university revealed that Professor Fasina personally intervened after learning of the detention. He reportedly contacted the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police and appealed for the immediate release of the detained union officials.
“The VC was away at the Nigeria Law School when he heard that some union leaders had been invited by the police. Associating him with their detention is misleading and entirely baseless,” the statement reiterated, as quoted by Akahi News.
FUOYE Reaffirms Commitment to Dialogue and Peace
The management condemned the conduct of the union members, describing their actions as “a disgrace in an academic environment.” It reaffirmed its commitment to staff welfare, dialogue, and institutional progress, urging all members of the university community to embrace peace and constructive engagement.
Akahi News gathered that FUOYE management also cautioned against the spread of false narratives capable of disrupting the stability of the institution, warning that misinformation and divisive politics would not be tolerated on campus.
The university reiterated that it remains focused on academic excellence, discipline, and mutual respect among staff and students.
