Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has called on young athletes to embrace discipline and professionalism as the bedrock of their careers, stressing that talent without character cannot sustain long-term success. He made the appeal during the Christian Chukwu Memorial Novelty Match held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, in honour of the late Nigerian football icon.

The event brought together an array of football veterans, including former players of Rangers International and members of Enugu All Stars. Although the highly anticipated game ended in a goalless draw, the atmosphere was one of nostalgia and reverence for Christian Chukwu, fondly remembered as “Chairman.”

Speaking through the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr Felix Nnamani, Governor Mbah described the memorial match as a fitting tribute to the late football great, assuring that the state government remains committed to immortalising Chukwu’s legacy. He urged the youth to draw inspiration from Chukwu’s exemplary life, which combined skill, discipline, and patriotism.

Celebrating a National Hero

Christian Chukwu, who passed away in April 2025 at the age of 74, was captain of the Green Eagles between 1974 and 1980, leading Nigeria to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980. He also guided the team to two consecutive third-place finishes in 1976 and 1978. Beyond his playing days, Chukwu managed Enugu Rangers, the Nigerian national team, and even coached Kenya, leaving behind an enduring mark on African football.

At the memorial, his former teammates and football administrators paid glowing tributes. Dominic “Alhaji” Nwobodo praised him as a captain who led with love and unity, while Chief Victor Atuonwu hailed his patriotism and lifelong service to Nigerian football. A minute of silence was observed, accompanied by prayers for his soul.

Discipline as a Path to Greatness

Governor Mbah stressed that discipline, consistency, and dedication were the secrets behind Chukwu’s success and urged aspiring footballers to emulate those qualities if they hope to achieve greatness. He reminded the gathering that sports is not only about winning but also about character, leadership, and national pride.

As Enugu State pledges to preserve Chukwu’s memory, the governor’s message stands as both a tribute to a legend and a clarion call to the next generation of Nigerian athletes.
