The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the arrest of more than 100 suspected political thugs in Bagwai Local Government Area of Kano State during Saturday’s by-election, underscoring the determination of security agencies to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
Over 100 Suspects Arrested
Addressing journalists in Bagwai, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kano, Abdu Zango, disclosed that the arrests were carried out in collaboration with security operatives deployed across the state. According to him, those apprehended were identified as potential threats to the smooth conduct of the polls.
“All those we’ve identified as threats to the process have been apprehended, and I can confidently say the election is proceeding peacefully,” Zango stated. He emphasised that the swift response of security agents helped avert what could have been major disruptions in the voting exercise.
Electoral Materials Deployed Early
The REC commended the timely deployment of sensitive electoral materials across the affected polling units. He noted that despite initial fears of delays, most locations were able to commence voting activities by 8:30 a.m.
“We had minor delays in some areas due to vehicle breakdowns and attempted disruptions by certain groups. However, security operatives were proactive in addressing these issues and restoring order,” he explained.
Security Agencies Take Charge
While Zango refrained from disclosing the identities of those arrested, he confirmed that the police had taken custody of the suspects and were preparing to charge them in court in line with existing laws. He assured voters that INEC was working closely with law enforcement to ensure that the by-election would not be marred by violence, intimidation, or vote-buying.
The arrests, according to observers, highlight the heightened political tension in Kano State, which has historically been a flashpoint during elections. The presence of security personnel across Bagwai helped to reassure voters and maintain order at polling centres.
INEC Reassures Citizens of Credibility
Zango reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to upholding democratic principles, stressing that the commission would not compromise on its mandate of delivering credible elections.
“The people of Bagwai and indeed all Nigerians should rest assured that INEC is determined to conduct a free, fair, and transparent by-election. The outcome will reflect the will of the people,” he said.
Political analysts believe that the arrests serve as a strong signal to those attempting to undermine the democratic process. They argue that decisive actions by security agencies are necessary to protect the credibility of elections and encourage citizens to exercise their franchise without fear.
