In his announcement, the governor revealed significant salary increases:

  • The minimum wage for civil servants in the state has been raised to ₦104,000 monthly.
  • Entry-level salary for lecturers in Imo State institutions has been pegged at ₦222,000.
  • Doctors in the state’s health sector will now earn ₦582,000 monthly, a move aimed at motivating healthcare workers and reducing brain drain.
  • The next batch of gratuity payments to senior citizens will commence tomorrow, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of retirees.

Boosting Morale and Reducing Hardship

Governor Uzodimma noted that the wage adjustments are designed to cushion the effects of current economic realities on workers and retirees. He emphasised that a motivated workforce is critical to the effective implementation of his administration’s development agenda.

“Our civil servants, teachers, doctors, and retirees deserve the assurance that their hard work and sacrifices are recognised. These adjustments reflect our commitment to social justice, economic stability, and improved quality of life for all Imo people,” the governor stated.

Reactions and Implications

Akahi News learnt that the announcement has sparked widespread reactions across the state, with many workers welcoming the new wage structure as a timely intervention. Union leaders in the civil service and education sectors have described the move as unprecedented and a step toward restoring dignity in public service.

Analysts say the increase in doctors’ pay to ₦582,000 monthly is particularly significant, given the ongoing exodus of medical professionals to other countries in search of better remuneration. By improving healthcare workers’ welfare, the Imo State government hopes to stabilise its health sector and enhance service delivery.

Similarly, the increase in lecturers’ entry-level salary is expected to boost morale in tertiary institutions and reduce industrial disputes linked to poor wages.

Support for Senior Citizens

The governor’s decision to commence the next phase of gratuity payments tomorrow has also been hailed as a relief for pensioners who have long awaited their entitlements. Community leaders say the gesture reflects compassion and respect for senior citizens who served the state in various capacities.

Looking Ahead

Governor Uzodimma assured that the new wage adjustments are sustainable and will not disrupt the state’s financial stability. He reiterated his administration’s resolve to continue implementing policies that prioritise workers, strengthen the economy, and improve governance.
