Tension in Idemili North as Ambush Turns Deadly

Information reaching Akahi News has it that tragedy struck on Thursday in parts of Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State after a woman was shot dead during a violent gun battle between unidentified gunmen and police escorts attached to a convoy linked to former Governor of Anambra State and former Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige.

According to details made available to journalists by Chief Fred Chukwulobe, a former spokesperson to Ngige, the attack occurred along the busy Nkpor–Nnobi axis when suspected armed men laid an ambush for the convoy.
Akahi News gathered that Senator Ngige was not physically present in the convoy when the attack unfolded.

Police Escort Targeted as Attackers Open Fire

During the sudden exchange of gunfire, the pilot vehicle of the convoy came under heavy attack. A police officer inside the vehicle was shot, and his rifle and uniform were forcibly taken by the assailants. Witnesses said the pilot vehicle was riddled with bullets as the gunmen sustained heavy fire before fleeing.

Further findings by Akahi News indicate that no police officer was killed in the assault. The escort team leader who sustained gunshot wounds was later taken into surgery and is said to be responding well to treatment.

Civilian Recording the Incident Killed Instantly

The incident took a horrific turn when a woman, reportedly filming the gun battle with her phone, was spotted by the gunmen. They allegedly opened fire on her, killing her instantly. Her death sparked panic in the area as residents scampered for safety.

Also caught in the crossfire was a nearby shop owner who rushed out to see what was happening. He was hit by stray bullets and suffered serious injuries, losing a significant amount of blood before being rushed to a medical facility. Reports reaching Akahi News show that he underwent surgery to remove bullets lodged in his body and is expected to make a full recovery.

Residents Demand Improved Security

The attack has renewed discussions around insecurity in parts of Anambra State, especially attacks carried out by gunmen disguised in military or police uniforms. Community members along the Nkpor–Nnobi corridor are calling for stronger surveillance, better intelligence sharing, and swift action to prevent similar tragedies.

The ambush on a convoy associated with a former governor—leading to the death of an innocent woman and injuries to civilians and security personnel—highlights the growing risks residents face in volatile parts of the state. As investigations continue, many hope the perpetrators will be apprehended and that security measures will be significantly strengthened.
