Obasanjo Says Nigerians May Seek International Help if Government Fails to Stop Killings

Former President Warns Nigeria Cannot Apologise for Seeking Protection

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that Nigerians have the right to seek support from the international community if the government fails in its constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property.

Obasanjo made the statement during the 2025 Plateau Unity Christmas Carol held at the Ten Commandments Altar in Jos, where he attended as a special guest at the invitation of the Plateau State Government.

He stressed that no citizen should apologise for demanding external assistance when domestic security structures fail to guarantee safety.

“We Are Being Killed, We Are Tired” — Obasanjo Speaks Bluntly

During his address, the former president lamented the worsening security situation across the country, saying Nigerians have endured too many deaths and violent attacks.

According to him, if government institutions cannot stop the killings, citizens are justified in calling for international intervention.
He questioned why Nigerians are being persuaded to remain silent or apologetic while innocent people continue to lose their lives daily.

Obasanjo insisted that with modern surveillance tools such as drones and satellite technology, criminals should not be allowed to carry out attacks and vanish without trace. Akahi News learnt that he expressed deep frustration over what he described as a lack of decisive action to use available technology to curb criminal activities.

A Repeated Warning on Rising Insecurity

Obasanjo has consistently spoken about insecurity over the years, but his latest statement carries a heavier tone, signalling widespread exhaustion among citizens. He warned that negotiating with criminals or giving excuses for their activities sends the wrong message and weakens national resolve.

He also stressed that the killings have no religious or ethnic justification, noting that “a Nigerian life lost is a loss to the entire nation.”
Akahi News gathered that the former president urged leaders at all levels to prioritise human life above politics, rivalry, or sentiments.

What Obasanjo’s Statement Means for Nigeria

Obasanjo’s fresh warning reflects a growing concern that the rate of insecurity has reached levels where many Nigerians no longer trust the system to protect them. Analysts believe his comments could trigger renewed debate about:

  • The effectiveness of government security strategies
  • The need for modern surveillance and intelligence tools
  • Whether Nigeria should accept or request international security support
  • The urgency of restoring public confidence in national institutions

Observers note that his remarks mirror the fears of many communities who continue to suffer violent attacks despite repeated government assurances.

Obasanjo’s message sends a clear signal: Nigerians are tired of mourning fellow citizens. If the government fails to act decisively, the people may look beyond national borders for help. His call reflects a growing demand for accountability, urgency, and decisive leadership to end the relentless killings and restore peace.
