Terrorists Strike Again Along Nigeria–Benin Border Corridor

Fear and tension have gripped communities in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State after gunmen suspected to be members of the notorious Lakurawa terrorist group launched a deadly midnight assault on a Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) checkpoint at Bakin Ruwa, along the Maje border axis.

Akahi News learnt that the attackers stormed the checkpoint unannounced and opened fire on officers on duty, killing three Immigration personnel instantly.

Residents Flee as Terrorists Launch Surprise Attack

According to locals who witnessed the attack, the terrorists arrived in large numbers and began shooting sporadically, forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
One resident, who spoke anonymously due to fear of reprisals, said the gunmen operated swiftly and without resistance.

Security sources told Akahi News that the assailants escaped through bush paths before reinforcements could arrive. The incident has deepened concerns over renewed terrorist activities in border communities.

Authorities Yet to Give Full Details

The spokesperson of the Kebbi State Police Command, Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed that information about the assault was still sketchy at the time of reporting.
Attempts by Akahi News to obtain an official response from the Nigeria Immigration Service in Kebbi State were unsuccessful, as officers could not be reached.

However, members of various security agencies in Bagudo, along with several local residents, confirmed the unfortunate development, expressing worry over the growing frequency of attacks targeting security personnel.

Rising Insecurity Along Maje Border Axis

This latest assault comes barely three weeks after a personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service was killed in a similar incident. During that earlier attack, the terrorists also set the security camp ablaze and destroyed several official vehicles.

The Maje border corridor — a strategic route between Nigeria and Benin Republic — has witnessed repeated incursions by criminal groups in recent months. The Lakurawa gang, in particular, has been associated with multiple violent operations across Kebbi State, targeting both civilians and security operatives.

Motives Remain Unclear as Investigations Begin

Security experts say the motive for the latest attack remains uncertain. While the Lakurawa group has a history of cross-border criminality, the increased boldness and frequency of their assaults have raised fresh concerns about gaps in surveillance along Nigeria’s border lines.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, even as residents of Bagudo and surrounding communities appeal for stronger security presence to prevent further loss of lives.
