Tension reportedly gripped parts of Benin City on Tuesday after gunshots disrupted a political gathering attended by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi. Allegations of an assassination attempt have since surfaced, though security agencies are yet to officially confirm the claims.

Akahi News gathered that the incident allegedly occurred shortly after a political event linked to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State’s capital.
What Reportedly Happened
According to statements attributed to the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, armed men allegedly opened fire following a formal political engagement at the ADC secretariat in Benin City.
Tanko, in a statement titled “Breaking Red Alert in Benin, Edo State,” reportedly claimed that Obi and other political figures were trailed from the secretariat to the residence of former Edo State governor, John Odigie-Oyegun.
He alleged that gunshots were fired at the gate of the residence, resulting in damage to vehicles within the premises. Tanko described the development as a calculated attempt on Obi’s life and those of other political actors present at the location.
However, as of press time, these claims remain unverified by security authorities.
Political Undercurrents in Edo State
The reported incident followed the defection of Olumide Akpata from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress — a move observers say could significantly reshape the political configuration in Edo State ahead of future electoral contests.
Edo has, in recent months, witnessed shifting alliances and strategic realignments. Political analysts note that such periods often heighten tensions, particularly when high-profile figures are involved.
That said, there is currently no independent confirmation linking the alleged gunfire directly to political rivalries or the defection.
Akahi News learnt that the evolving situation underscores the fragile intersection between politics and security in Nigeria’s democratic space.
Security Agencies Yet to Speak
At the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies in Edo State had not issued an official statement confirming or refuting the alleged assassination attempt.
Efforts by journalists to obtain clarification were reportedly unsuccessful.
Importantly, no casualties have been officially reported in connection with the alleged shooting.
Tanko has called on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure accountability should criminal conduct be established.
What Is Confirmed So Far
While several claims are circulating, the following points remain the only verifiable elements at this stage:
- Gunshots were reportedly heard after a political event in Benin City.
- Allegations of an assassination attempt were made by Yunusa Tanko.
- The event followed Olumide Akpata’s reported defection to the ADC.
- No deaths or injuries have been officially confirmed.
- Security agencies have yet to release an authoritative statement.
Broader Implications
If substantiated, the incident would raise fresh concerns about political safety and the protection of public figures in Nigeria. Allegations of violence around political events risk deepening mistrust and further polarising the polity.
However, it is equally important to await verified findings from security agencies before drawing definitive conclusions. In politically sensitive matters, premature assumptions can inflame tensions and undermine due process.
Akahi News will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more credible information becomes available.
