Heroic Rescue in Cameroon as Resident Saves Child from 37-Metre-Deep Well
A dramatic rescue operation unfolded on Thursday afternoon in Bertoua, eastern Cameroon, after a child fell into a 37-metre-deep well, sparking panic among residents before ending in relief and celebration.
Panic as Child Falls into Deep Well
Eyewitnesses told Akahi News that the child began crying for help immediately after the fall, alerting the mother, who quickly raised the alarm. Within minutes, neighbours and passers-by gathered at the scene, but the depth of the well made any immediate rescue attempt extremely risky.

Several residents reportedly considered going down but hesitated, fearing for their own safety due to the narrow opening and depth of the well.
Resident Volunteers for Risky Rescue
The situation took a hopeful turn when a local resident, Song Bosco, volunteered to descend into the well. According to residents, Bosco carefully went down using improvised support, while anxious onlookers waited above.
For nearly 30 minutes, there was no sign of movement, raising fears that the rescuer himself might be in danger. Tension mounted as the crowd prayed and watched in silence.
Cheers as Child Rescued Alive
After about 45 minutes, Bosco emerged from the well carrying the child, who was alive and reportedly unharmed. The moment triggered loud cheers, applause, and emotional scenes as villagers hailed Bosco’s bravery.
The child’s mother, overwhelmed with gratitude, publicly thanked Bosco and pledged to reward him for saving her child’s life.
Calls for Better Safety Measures
In the aftermath of the incident, residents of Bertoua are urging authorities and community leaders to enforce stricter safety measures around open wells. Akahi News gathered that many locals believe proper covering and fencing of wells could prevent similar near-tragedies in the future.
Observers noted that the incident highlights ongoing safety challenges in residential areas, where uncovered wells continue to pose serious risks, especially to children.
