“I Didn’t Kill the Opposition” — Tinubu Breaks Silence on Defections to APC

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has firmly dismissed allegations that he is orchestrating defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that he neither coerced nor pressured any politician to abandon their political platform.

The President made the clarification on Wednesday during an interfaith Iftar with senators at the Presidential Villa, where he addressed growing claims that his administration is deliberately weakening opposition parties ahead of future political contests.

Speaking candidly at the gathering, President Tinubu said critics were entitled to their opinions but strongly rejected suggestions that he was behind the wave of defections to the APC.

“Critics must talk. When they accused me of killing the opposition, but I didn’t have a gun. I could have given myself a licence when I have the authority,” he said.

Akahi News gathered that the President’s remarks were delivered in a tone that combined humour with firmness, as he sought to dispel narratives portraying him as politically intolerant.

The issue of defections has remained a contentious topic in Nigeria’s political space, with opposition figures alleging undue influence and pressure from the ruling party. However, Tinubu maintained that political decisions by individuals should not be misinterpreted as executive manipulation.

“Jumping from a Sinking Ship”

In a striking metaphor, the President likened the decisions of defecting politicians to abandoning a “sinking ship,” suggesting that personal political survival and calculations often drive such moves.

“But I can’t blame anybody for jumping out of a sinking ship if they did,” he stated.

Akahi News understands that this comment may further intensify debate across party lines, as it implicitly questions the internal stability of opposition platforms.

Political analysts note that defections are not new to Nigeria’s democratic landscape. Historically, lawmakers and governors have switched allegiances for strategic, ideological, or survival reasons. Observers argue that such movements often reflect broader shifts in political power dynamics rather than singular influence from the presidency.

National Security and Political Tensions

President Tinubu also linked the broader political climate to ongoing national security challenges, including terrorism and banditry.

“What we have faced in the challenging period of this country, the terrorism and banditry, is causing us havoc,” he said.

Akahi News reports that the President suggested that insecurity and economic pressures have heightened political tensions nationwide. Some experts believe that instability within party structures can be exacerbated by national crises, as politicians seek alignment with perceived stronger platforms.

By referencing security challenges, Tinubu appeared to frame the defections within a wider national context rather than a narrow political strategy.

Call for Unity and Constitutional Democracy

Beyond addressing accusations, the President used the occasion to call for unity among political leaders. He urged them to reflect on the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers, stressing that constitutional democracy was designed to foster cooperation rather than conflict.

“And we should pull together, unite in a way that our forefathers contemplated to bring about a constitutional democracy and pull us together. They didn’t say we should fight. It’s a good thing that we are working in harmony,” he added.

Akahi News learnt that the interfaith Iftar setting underscored a message of reconciliation and shared national purpose. Observers say the President’s remarks may be aimed at softening political rhetoric while reinforcing the legitimacy of Nigeria’s multiparty system.

Political Implications Ahead

The President’s comments are likely to generate varied reactions across the political spectrum. While supporters may view his remarks as a defence of democratic choice, critics could argue that systemic imbalances still favour the ruling party.

Nonetheless, Akahi News notes that defections remain constitutionally permissible within Nigeria’s democratic framework, provided due process is followed.

As political realignments continue to shape the national landscape, the coming months may reveal whether the President’s call for unity translates into reduced partisan tension or intensified debate.

For now, President Tinubu has made his position clear: he rejects claims of coercion and insists that political actors are responsible for their own decisions.
