On Tuesday, a quiet civic centre in Wanokom transformed into a place of dialogue, resolve, and community unity as residents from the six wards of Ukelle gathered for a Town Hall Meeting that carried weight far beyond its walls. Organised by the Cross River State Ministry of Women Affairs in partnership with UN Women, the meeting addressed some of the most painful challenges faced by women and girls—sexual violence and deeply embedded harmful cultural practices.

The atmosphere inside the Ilemoha Civic Centre was anything but formal. From village elders to school-aged girls, the room was filled with voices eager to be heard. The strong turnout was a testament to the community’s readiness to confront the difficult issues that have lingered for too long in silence.

Representing the Yala Local Government Chairman, Hon. Dr. Fred I. Okem, was his Special Assistant on Youths and Sports, Comrade Solomon Ada, who reminded attendees that the struggle for justice and safety must include everyone—young and old, men and women alike. “When we protect women, we protect our future,” he said, drawing nods and scattered applause from the audience.

Also speaking on behalf of the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ending violence against women in both policy and practice. Her words struck a chord, especially among the women who had travelled from neighbouring wards to attend.

Traditional leaders were fully present and engaged—a rare but encouraging sign of cultural shifts underway. HRH Ubet Ignatius Olem, Chairman of the Ukelle Traditional Ruling Council, attended alongside clan heads from Wanokom, Wanibolor, and Ujikatom. Their presence lent weight to the conversations, as they openly acknowledged the need to reflect on customs that have, knowingly or not, caused harm.

Other notable attendees included Hon. Francis Ulakom, former Vice Chairman of Yala LGA, and Mr. Denis Wogor, a well-respected community leader from Wanokom, both of whom called for practical, community-led responses to these pressing issues.

What unfolded during the gathering was more than a meeting—it was a moment of reckoning. Stories were shared, painful truths were spoken aloud, and a shared determination began to take root.

As the sun dipped behind the hills of Wanokom, there was no mistaking the feeling in the air: something important had begun.
