INEC Announces Commencement of Nationwide Voter Registration Exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the commencement of its nationwide Voter Registration Exercise, calling on eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity to register, replace lost or damaged voter cards, and update their polling unit information.

According to the electoral body, the registration exercise is targeted at three main categories of individuals: citizens who have recently turned 18 years old and have never registered before; those who have lost their voter’s card or whose cards were damaged or destroyed; and voters who wish to change their polling unit either within the same ward, across different Local Government Areas, or from one state to another.

In a detailed schedule released by INEC, online voter registration will begin on Monday, 18th August 2025, allowing citizens to initiate the process from the comfort of their homes through the commission’s official online portal. Physical registration at all INEC Local Government Offices nationwide is set to commence a week later, on Monday, 25th August 2025, to cater for biometric capturing and the issuance of voter cards.

The Commission urged Nigerians to spread the information widely, stressing that it should not be limited to political groups alone but also shared in all communities, social circles, and civic platforms to ensure maximum participation.

INEC reiterated that voter registration is a fundamental civic responsibility and a critical step toward strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process. Citizens are advised to register early to avoid last-minute rush and to ensure their readiness to participate in upcoming elections.
