Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has revealed how a Premier League regulation stopped Manchester United from completing his signing, despite a pre-contract agreement being in place during his teenage years.
Mikel, who was widely regarded as one of Africa’s most promising young talents at the time, was expected to join the Red Devils after turning 18. However, the move eventually collapsed due to a league rule governing the eligibility of foreign players.
Ferguson’s Interest and Training Ground Plans
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, the former Chelsea midfielder disclosed that then-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was eager to bring him to Old Trafford.
“Fergie loved me. He would always pair me with Roy Keane because he thought Keane would protect me from the likes of Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, who were always tackling people in training,” Mikel revealed.
According to Mikel, Ferguson already had a clear plan for his development within the squad, highlighting the level of confidence the legendary manager had in his abilities.
Premier League Work Permit Rule Explained
Mikel explained that the transfer was ultimately blocked by a Premier League regulation which required foreign players to have featured in at least 75 per cent of their country’s senior national team matches to qualify for a work permit.
“At the time, the rule required players to have represented their national team in at least 75 per cent of matches before being eligible to sign,” he stated.
Akahi News gathered that this regulation proved to be a major stumbling block, as Mikel had not yet met the required number of senior international appearances for Nigeria.
Failed Alternative Plans Before Age 18
The former midfielder added that Manchester United explored alternative options to secure his signature before his 18th birthday, but the strategy could not be implemented.
“The strategy was to get me in and out before I turned 18, but that wasn’t possible in my case,” Mikel explained.
As a result, the highly anticipated move to Old Trafford fell through, bringing an end to Manchester United’s pursuit of the Nigerian star.
Chelsea Move and Trophy-Laden Career
Mikel eventually joined Chelsea in 2006 at the age of 19, following a well-publicised transfer saga involving multiple clubs. His move to Stamford Bridge marked the beginning of a long and successful chapter in his career.
During nearly 11 years with the Blues, Mikel made 372 appearances and scored six goals, establishing himself as one of Chelsea’s most dependable midfielders. He won several domestic and European honours, including Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.
