Joseph Iyaji Daily Catholic Reflection for Today – Tuesday, 12th August 2025
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
Theme: “The Lord Goes Before You – Humility in the Kingdom”
First Reading: Deuteronomy 31:1-8
In today’s first reading, Moses, aware that his time as Israel’s leader is ending, reassures the people that God Himself will go before them. He encourages them to be strong and courageous, for the Lord will never fail or abandon them. This passage is a reminder that no matter the challenges ahead, the presence of God is the ultimate guarantee of victory.

The leadership transition from Moses to Joshua demonstrates that God’s mission continues beyond any single person. Faithfulness, not fear, is the believer’s key weapon.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14
The Gospel presents the disciples asking Jesus who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus responds by placing a child before them, declaring that unless they become like little children, they will not enter the Kingdom.
He highlights humility, simplicity, and total trust in God as the marks of true greatness. Jesus also warns against despising “these little ones,” reminding us that their angels always see the face of the Father. Furthermore, through the parable of the lost sheep, He reveals God’s relentless pursuit of the one who strays—showing divine love that values every soul.
Reflection for the Day
Today’s readings call us to two core Christian attitudes—trust in God’s presence and humility before Him. Like Israel, we often face uncertain paths, but God’s promise remains: “The Lord Himself will go before you and be with you.”
In the Gospel, Jesus challenges our human ambition by pointing to childlike humility as the entrance key to Heaven. To be “great” is to rely fully on God, to be teachable, and to serve others with sincerity.
The parable of the lost sheep reminds us that God does not give up on anyone. We are called to share this divine compassion by seeking out the spiritually lost and guiding them home.
Faith Action
- Start your day with a short prayer of surrender, trusting God to “go before you” in all your activities.
- Choose humility over self-promotion in your interactions today.
- Reach out to someone who has been distant from the faith and offer encouragement.
Prayer
Lord, give me the courage to trust You in every circumstance and the humility to walk in childlike faith. May I never despise the little ones, but rather share in Your joy of finding the lost. Amen.
