Know Christ, Live Your Faith — Bishop Oyejola Charges Catholic Students at NFCS Programme

The Nigerian Federation of Catholic Students (NFCS), Osogbo Diocese, recently hosted a spiritually enriching “Weekend with the Lord” programme presided over by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Osogbo, Most Rev. John Oyejola, alongside the diocesan chaplain, Rev. Fr. PeterPaul Akinola.

The gathering brought together Catholic students for prayers, spiritual reflections, and teachings focused on strengthening faith, deepening personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and encouraging Christian values among young people.

In his address, Bishop Oyejola challenged participants on the true meaning and importance of fasting, especially during the Lenten season.

He questioned how many Christians faithfully observe fasting with sincerity, noting that while individuals with health challenges such as ulcers may be excused, many others often fail to take the spiritual discipline seriously.

The Bishop urged the students and faithful to renew their commitment to fasting with genuine spiritual purpose and dedication.

Call to Charity and Generosity

The cleric also encouraged Catholic students to embrace a lifestyle of charity and generosity, particularly towards the poor and vulnerable in society.

According to him, no act of giving is too small before God, stressing that generosity attracts divine blessings.

He advised the students to move away from a culture focused solely on receiving and instead cultivate the habit of selfless giving and service to others.

“Know Christ Personally”

Speaking further, Bishop Oyejola reflected on the meaning of truly knowing a person, explaining that familiarity allows one to understand and even predict another person’s actions.

Using the Gospel message of the day, he noted that Philip knew Christ and reminded the congregation that although Jesus assumed human nature, He remains divine and without sin.

The Bishop explained that the central purpose of the programme was to help participants encounter Jesus Christ personally rather than depend entirely on others for spiritual growth.

Referencing Philippians 3:9–10, he encouraged attendees to seek a deeper and more personal relationship with Christ.

Faith Defines Identity, Bishop Says

Bishop Oyejola also urged the students to remain steadfast in their faith, emphasising that faith plays a major role in shaping identity and purpose.

He stressed that life is not ultimately about wealth, material possessions, or marriage alone, but about truly knowing Jesus Christ, who gives life its real meaning.

He outlined practical ways of growing closer to Christ, including prayer, fasting, and active participation in faith-building activities.

The Bishop reminded the congregation that the Catholic faith is one that seeks understanding and called on believers to trust Jesus in every aspect of life.

Preparation for Pentecost

Quoting Christ’s invitation to those who are burdened and weary, Bishop Oyejola reassured the faithful of God’s promise of rest and peace.

As the Church prepares for Pentecost, he urged Christians to become more attentive to the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Chaplain Appreciates Bishop, Encourages Eucharistic Life

In his remarks, Rev. Fr. PeterPaul Akinola appreciated Bishop Oyejola for his fatherly support and spiritual guidance to the students and the diocese at large.

He also welcomed the Provincial President, Mr. Michael Ajekiigbe, and commended the students for their sincere communion with God throughout the programme.

Fr. Akinola encouraged the participants to regularly partake in the Holy Eucharist as a means of strengthening their spiritual lives and sustaining their faith journey.

The “Weekend with the Lord” programme provided Catholic students in Osogbo Diocese with an opportunity for spiritual renewal, deeper reflection, and stronger commitment to Christian living.

Participants were encouraged to continue seeking personal encounters with Christ while remaining active in prayer, charity, and faithful participation in the life of the Church.
