Lagos Man Cleared of Child Molestation Charge After Seven Years in Custody

An elderly Lagos resident, Mr. Idowu Fashola, has finally regained his freedom after spending seven years in detention over an allegation of child molestation, a case that was ultimately dismissed by the court for lack of evidence.

According to information from PUNCH Online, Fashola was accused of raping a young girl who had lived with his family from the age of three. The allegation triggered a prolonged legal battle that saw him remain in custody for several years before the court ruled in his favour. Akahi News gathered that the ruling has renewed conversations around prolonged detention, access to justice, and the human cost of unproven criminal allegations.

Speaking on his ordeal, Fashola explained that the girl was brought into his home by his wife for care and basic upbringing. According to him, the child lived with his family from early childhood and remained there until she reached secondary school age, when she eventually returned to live with her biological parents.

He said the arrangement was purely humanitarian, insisting that his family treated the girl as one of their own throughout her stay. Akahi News learnt that no complaints were raised during the years she lived with the family.

Arrest and Prolonged Legal Battle

Trouble began, Fashola said, when the girl’s family later arrived at his residence with police officers and accused him of rape. The allegation led to his arrest and subsequent prosecution, plunging him into a lengthy court process.

He recounted that the accusation shocked him and his family, noting that he was immediately taken into custody as the case moved slowly through the judicial system. Akahi News gathered that the case dragged on for several years, during which Fashola remained behind bars awaiting a final determination.

Court Verdict: No Case to Answer

After years of trial, the court eventually ruled that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against him. Fashola was consequently found not guilty and discharged after the court held that he had no case to answer.

According to information from PUNCH Online, the judgment brought an end to his seven-year ordeal in custody, marking a significant moment of relief for the elderly man and his family.

Renewed Concerns Over Justice System

The case has once again raised concerns about prolonged pre-trial detention and the emotional, physical, and social toll it takes on individuals accused of serious crimes. Legal analysts say cases like Fashola’s underscore the need for faster trials and stronger safeguards against wrongful or prolonged incarceration.

Akahi News gathered that human rights advocates are calling for reforms to ensure that suspects are not left languishing in custody for years without conclusive evidence against them.

Life After Vindication

Fashola said his discharge has brought mixed emotions, combining relief with the pain of years lost while trying to prove his innocence. He appealed for greater caution in handling sensitive allegations, stressing that false or unproven accusations can destroy lives and families.

As discussions continue around justice sector reforms, Akahi News will continue to monitor similar cases and developments that highlight the challenges within Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
