Massive Endorsement for Gov. Bassey Otu as Ijiraga Community Pledges Support for Second Term

Ijiraga community in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State was agog on Friday as thousands of residents trooped out in an unprecedented show of solidarity to endorse the Governor of Cross River State, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, and his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, PhD, for a second term in office.

The landmark endorsement event, which brought together political leaders, community stakeholders, and ordinary citizens, was led by Ambassador Emmanuel Asegem, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Timber Control (North), a well-respected political figure and grassroots mobiliser. Alongside his ward, political allies, and community members, Asegem openly declared unwavering support for the Otu–Odey administration, describing it as a government anchored on results and inclusiveness.

Governor Otu’s People-Centred Achievements

In his address, Chief Asegem commended Governor Otu for what he termed “impactful and people-driven leadership,” highlighting several initiatives that have transformed rural communities and enhanced citizens’ welfare.

Among the key projects listed were:

  • Electricity rehabilitation projects across remote areas, bringing power to communities that had endured darkness for years.
  • Revitalisation of primary healthcare centres and sustained medical outreach programmes, ensuring better access to healthcare for rural dwellers.
  • Support for farmers through fertiliser distribution and agricultural interventions aimed at boosting food production and rural incomes.
  • Prompt payment of workers’ salaries, fostering public service morale and efficiency.
  • Improved road infrastructure, opening up communities for economic activities and reducing travel hardships.

“These achievements speak volumes about a government committed to the welfare of its people. Governor Otu has proven to be a leader who listens, acts, and delivers,” Asegem declared to loud applause from the crowd.


A Community United in Prayer and Purpose

The event also featured a solemn prayer session led by HRH Chief Ignatius Olem, who prayed for divine wisdom, guidance, and protection for Governor Otu and Deputy Governor Peter Odey as they continue to pilot the state’s affairs.

The motion for the official endorsement was moved by the Deputy Leader of the Yala Legislative Council, Hon. Monday Ekapbi, and seconded by the Councillor representing Intrigo Ward, Hon. Joy Udama, both describing the administration as one that has “restored the people’s confidence in government.”


Political Heavyweights Rally Behind Otu–Odey

The gathering attracted prominent political leaders from Yala and beyond, including Hon. John Ulafor, Hon. Patrick Egana, and Hon. Abeng Emmanuel, who pledged total loyalty and support for the Otu–Odey administration.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Ulafor noted, “Governor Otu has demonstrated what it means to lead with vision and compassion. We are not just endorsing him; we are standing with a government that listens and delivers.”


Ambassador Asegem’s Final Assurance

In his closing remarks, Ambassador Asegem assured the governor and his deputy of the unwavering support of Ijiraga and the entire Ukelle Nation. He emphasised that the administration’s inclusive governance model and track record of tangible results had earned the people’s trust.

“Ukelle Nation will remain steadfast in supporting this administration. The second-term bid is not just about politics; it is about continuity of good governance and development for our people,” Asegem said, drawing thunderous cheers from the crowd.


With the massive turnout and enthusiastic endorsement, the Otu–Odey administration appears to have strengthened its political base in Yala, sending a strong signal ahead of the 2027 general elections.
