Nigeria Bleeds: Call for National War on Insecurity as Over 100 Killed in One Weekend
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
Nigeria is reeling from a bloody weekend that claimed over 100 lives across several states, prompting fresh calls for a full-scale national war on insecurity.

Reports emerging from Borno, Sokoto, Katsina, and Edo reveal a series of coordinated attacks that have left communities devastated. Among the victims were eight officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), five soldiers, and dozens of civilians caught in the crossfire.
The horrifying weekend incidents also included the abduction of a Chinese national in Edo, the kidnapping of passengers on the Benin–Iyere–Oluku road, and massacres in multiple communities across Borno State.
“No Nation Can Prosper Under Siege”
Expressing deep condolences to the families of the fallen officers and civilians, concerned Nigerians are calling for immediate, decisive action.
“When over 100 Nigerians are killed in a single weekend, our casualty figures rival those of countries officially at war,” one statement read. “This is no longer business as usual. It is time to declare a national war on insecurity — to mobilise every resource, every agency, every state, and to suspend all distractions while we reclaim our nation from lawlessness.”
The statement further condemned the frequent foreign trips by government officials while the nation battles unprecedented levels of violence.
“Junketing around the world under the pretence of wooing investors, while the country bleeds, is to live in denial. Investors will not come into a war zone,” it stressed, urging leaders to remain at home and personally coordinate the fight against insecurity.
Lessons From History
Nigeria’s security situation, analysts warn, risks mirroring the tragic collapse witnessed in countries such as Somalia and Libya, where insecurity spiralled beyond control.
“No nation can prosper while its citizens live under siege,” the statement emphasised, noting that unchecked violence could lead to total national collapse if urgent measures are not taken.
A Call to Action
Security experts insist that Nigeria must now treat insecurity as a full-scale war, requiring a unified, coordinated response at the federal, state, and local levels.
As the country mourns yet another mass casualty weekend, the call for a new, secure Nigeria grows louder.
“A new Nigeria is possible,” the statement concluded.
