Nigerian Army Confirms Minor Explosion and Fire Outbreak at Ilese Barracks, Ijebu-Ode

The Nigerian Army has confirmed a minor explosion and fire incident at the Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, earlier today, 14 August 2025. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, was traced to one of the storage buildings belonging to the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) Squadron.

According to an official statement, the explosion triggered a limited fire outbreak within the affected storage facility. Troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, in collaboration with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, acted promptly to contain the flames and prevent the situation from escalating.

The Army confirmed that no casualties were recorded, and there were no injuries to military personnel or civilians. The damage was confined to the storage building and some materials housed within, with structural assessments now underway to determine the full extent of material loss.

Residents Urged to Remain Calm

In its statement, the Nigerian Army reassured residents of Ilese and neighbouring communities that there is no cause for alarm. The situation, it said, is fully under control, and normal activities can continue without disruption.

Furthermore, the Army revealed that a comprehensive investigation has been launched, in collaboration with relevant security and safety agencies, to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The statement emphasised the Army’s dedication to safeguarding the lives and property of both military personnel and civilians in surrounding areas. “The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its personnel as well as members of neighbouring communities,” the release concluded.

The Ilese Barracks, home to various engineering units, plays a strategic role in countering threats such as improvised explosive devices, making safety protocols and storage security a top operational priority.
