Nigerian Man Arrested in India with Drugs Worth Rs 42.8 Lakh
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
Authorities in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, India, have arrested a 45-year-old Nigerian national, Kalu Bassey Chukwuemeka, for allegedly possessing mephedrone valued at Rs 42.8 lakh (approximately ₦79 million).

The arrest, which took place on October 11 during a routine police patrol near a cricket club in Nallasopara, highlights the continued crackdown by Indian law enforcement on international narcotics networks operating within the region.
Police Operation Uncovers Synthetic Drugs
According to Akahi News findings, officers attached to the Palghar district Anti-Narcotics Cell reportedly observed the suspect behaving suspiciously during the patrol. Upon searching him, the police discovered 214 grams of mephedrone, a synthetic stimulant prohibited under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The substance, known locally as “meow meow,” has gained notoriety in India’s illicit drug market for its psychoactive effects and rising street value.
Police sources told Akahi News that Chukwuemeka, who resides in Pragati Nagar, was immediately detained and has since been formally charged under the NDPS Act.
Broader Crackdown on Cross-Border Drug Trade
Indian authorities have in recent years intensified efforts to curb foreign-linked drug trafficking, particularly cases involving West African nationals allegedly tied to international narcotics syndicates.
The Palghar police stated that investigations are ongoing to trace the source of the seized drugs and determine whether the suspect is connected to a larger trafficking network operating within or outside Maharashtra.
Security analysts told Akahi News that India’s western states, particularly Maharashtra and Goa, have increasingly become hot zones for drug smuggling activities involving foreign nationals, prompting tighter border checks and intelligence-led policing.
Nigeria’s Growing Image Challenge Abroad
This latest arrest adds to a troubling pattern of Nigerian nationals being implicated in drug-related offences across Asia, a situation that continues to tarnish Nigeria’s international reputation.
Analysts urge the Nigerian government and diaspora associations to strengthen awareness campaigns and provide better community engagement to discourage involvement in illicit trades abroad.
As the investigation continues, the Indian police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a zero-tolerance stance on drug offences under the NDPS Act.
