Nnamdi Kanu Stuns Court, Sacks Lawyers and Chooses to Defend Himself
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
In a dramatic courtroom twist, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, appeared before the court today and declared that he would personally defend himself, having reportedly dismissed his entire legal team.

According to courtroom eyewitnesses who spoke to Akahi News, Kanu, dressed in his signature white attire, appeared calm yet resolute as he addressed the judge directly, announcing that he no longer required the services of his lawyers.
“I Will Defend Myself” — Kanu Tells Court
Sources told Akahi News that the IPOB leader’s announcement took many by surprise, including court officials and observers who had followed the long-running case closely. Kanu reportedly told the court that he was fully capable of handling his own defence and preferred to represent himself henceforth.
“I will conduct my own defence,” he was quoted as saying confidently, drawing murmurs of astonishment from the courtroom.
Mixed Reactions from Supporters and Observers
Kanu’s decision immediately drew mixed reactions within and outside the court. His loyal supporters hailed the move as a display of courage and conviction, describing it as a stand against perceived judicial oppression.

However, legal analysts and human rights observers expressed concern, warning that self-representation in such a complex and politically charged case could prove risky.
One Lagos-based lawyer who spoke with Akahi News noted that while Nigerian law allows a defendant to represent themselves, it often requires a deep understanding of legal procedures and technicalities — especially in cases involving national security.
Background to the Case
Akahi News recalls that Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention since his arrest and extradition to Nigeria in 2021 on charges bordering on treasonable felony, terrorism, and incitement. His legal battles have stretched over several years, marked by multiple adjournments, appeals, and international attention.
The latest courtroom drama adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing trial, which continues to polarise public opinion across Nigeria’s political and ethnic lines.
What Happens Next
At press time, the presiding judge was said to have acknowledged Kanu’s request and adjourned proceedings to allow for necessary procedural adjustments. It remains unclear whether Kanu intends to reassemble a new defence team or fully proceed alone in the coming hearings.
Observers told Akahi News that today’s development could significantly shape the next phase of the IPOB leader’s trial — either strengthening his resolve or complicating his legal standing.
