Viral Video Alleges EFCC Operatives Raided Apartment Through Ceiling, Used Acid on Gate in Calabar
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
A viral video circulating across social media has sparked outrage after a man claimed that operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raided his apartment in Calabar, Cross River State, on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.

In the footage obtained by Akahi News, the man, visibly distressed, alleged that EFCC officials broke into their residence through the POP ceiling and poured acid on the gate’s lock to gain access to the compound.
Allegations of Destruction and Forced Entry
The short clips, which have gone viral on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, show visible damage to the ceiling — reportedly from where the operatives entered the building. The man behind the camera narrated that the acid used by the EFCC team melted and destroyed their gate’s locking system, leaving them frightened and confused.
“They broke through our ceiling, poured acid on our gate lock to open it, and stormed in without any explanation,” the man lamented in the video, which has since triggered widespread online reactions.
EFCC Yet to Respond
As of Thursday, October 23, 2025, the EFCC has not released any official statement confirming or denying the alleged raid. Akahi News gathered that the agency’s silence has further fuelled speculation about its operational procedures, especially in residential areas.

Nigerians on social media have demanded transparency from the anti-graft agency, calling for an investigation into what many described as a violation of human rights and privacy.
Nigerians Question EFCC’s Tactics
This latest controversy has reignited national debate over the EFCC’s frequent nighttime raids, often criticised for alleged use of excessive force and lack of due process.
Several online commentators told Akahi News that even if the raid had legal authorisation, the alleged use of acid and destruction of property could amount to an abuse of power.
Human rights activists have also urged the Commission to review its operational ethics, insisting that “fighting crime should not come at the cost of citizens’ safety and dignity.”
Awaiting Clarification
At the time of filing this report, Akahi News could not independently verify the man’s claims or confirm whether arrests were made during the alleged operation. Further investigation and an official EFCC clarification are awaited to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The development once again places the spotlight on the need for accountability and professionalism in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts, as the public calls for greater oversight of enforcement agencies.
