The Great Ife Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has provided much-needed reassurance to students amidst concerns over potential fee increments, announcing that there will be no hike in tuition fees. The union also urged indigent students facing financial difficulties to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme to support their academic pursuits.

The announcement came through an official statement signed by the Union President, Adelani David Oluwatodimu, and the Secretary General, Habeeb Oke Isa, following engagements with the university management and other stakeholders.
Assurance on Non-Increment in Fees
According to the union, consultations with university authorities have confirmed that there will be no increment in student fees despite the prevailing economic hardships in the country.
“We commend the management for maintaining affordability and accessibility to education, ensuring students can continue their academic journey without additional financial strain,” the statement read.
The union also urged students to remain focused on their studies, assuring them of its commitment to tirelessly advocate for their welfare.
Appeal to Indigent Students: NELFUND Scheme Explained
Addressing concerns of students struggling financially, the union highlighted the Federal Government’s NELFUND initiative, which provides interest-free loans for eligible undergraduates to cover tuition and upkeep.
The Students’ Union explained that the loan scheme was designed to alleviate economic hardship and prevent students from abandoning their education due to financial constraints.
All qualified students have been strongly encouraged to apply via the official NELFUND portal, with assurances of prompt processing.
For students encountering challenges during the application process, a special complaints channel has been created via this online form.
Union’s Commitment to Student Welfare
The leadership of the Great Ife Students’ Union reiterated its unwavering commitment to student welfare and its resolve to continue engaging with management to safeguard students’ interests.
“We want to unequivocally state that the Union leadership remains dedicated to the welfare and wellbeing of every student. Our goal is to ensure that no one is left behind due to financial difficulties,” the statement emphasised.
Background on NELFUND Scheme
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) was introduced by the Federal Government to support students in public tertiary institutions. The interest-free loan scheme aims to provide financial relief amid the rising cost of living, ensuring equitable access to education for all.
Eligible students are expected to repay the loan upon gaining employment after graduation, making the scheme a sustainable model for future beneficiaries.
Call to Action for OAU Students
The union leadership has urged students to seize this opportunity, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, while assuring them of continuous support throughout the process.
“We encourage all eligible students to apply immediately to avoid missing out on this vital initiative,” the statement concluded.
