Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja Crowned 44th Olubadan of Ibadan After Three-Decade Journey
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
In a kingdom where the path to the throne is often described as a marathon rather than a sprint, history was made on 26 September 2025 when Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, at the age of 81, was crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

For over three decades, the former Governor of Oyo State patiently climbed 22 traditional steps in Ibadan’s unique monarchical system, each one bringing him closer to the revered throne. His coronation marks the conclusion of a remarkable journey that bridges the world of politics and the cultural heritage of Ibadan royalty.
A Life of Politics, Leadership, and Tradition
Born on 25 September 1944, Oba Ladoja’s early life was defined by academic excellence and public service. He attended Ibadan Boys’ High School between 1958 and 1963 before proceeding to Olivet Baptist High School in 1964. His quest for higher education took him to the University of Liège in Belgium, where he studied from 1966 to 1972.
Oba Ladoja began his professional career at Total Nigeria between 1973 and 1985 before venturing into business and finance, serving as a director at Standard Trust Bank Ltd in 2000.
His political career gained prominence when he represented Oyo South Senatorial District in the short-lived Third Republic between 1992 and 1993. A decade later, he became the Executive Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007, where he left a legacy of infrastructure development and educational reforms.
The Throne Awaits No Hurry
The Ibadan chieftaincy system is renowned for its long, structured succession process where kings ascend through two lines — the civil (Otun) and the military (Balogun). Oba Ladoja patiently climbed all 22 steps, embodying the perseverance and respect for tradition that defines Ibadan royalty.
His coronation as the 44th Olubadan is seen by many as both the fulfilment of destiny and a moment of unity for Ibadanland.
A New Chapter for Ibadan
Residents and dignitaries from across Nigeria gathered to witness the historic event, celebrating a leader whose life journey spans governance, business, and traditional leadership. Analysts believe his reign will blend modern administrative experience with cultural preservation, positioning Ibadan for greater prominence in South-West Nigeria.
As Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja takes his place on the throne, Ibadan indigenes at home and abroad look forward to a reign marked by wisdom, progress, and enduring peace.
