Ohanaeze Ndigbo Dismisses Fake Report, Says Igbos Free to Contest 2027 Presidency
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has declared that every Igbo person is free to contest the 2027 presidential election or any other political position in Nigeria, provided they belong to a political party.

The clarification was issued on Wednesday by the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator Azuta Mbata, following a publication by a group of impostors who falsely claimed that no Igbo would contest the 2027 presidency.
Mbata dismissed the report as fake news, stressing that it did not emanate from the umbrella body.
“Any Igbo person who belongs to a political party and wants to contest any elections whatsoever in 2027 is free to do so,” Mbata said. “Any publications to the contrary are fake, did not originate from Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and should be discounted.”
He further clarified that Ohanaeze Ndigbo is a socio-cultural organisation, not a political party, and therefore has no authority to dictate or advise who should or should not contest elections in Nigeria.
The Igbo leader urged members of the ethnic group to continue their lawful political activities within the political parties of their choice and ignore distractions from unauthorised publications.
Akahi News gathered that the development comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gain momentum across the country.
