Monarchs Demand Proof of Serious Allegations

A major traditional leadership tussle has erupted in Osun State as a group of monarchs under the umbrella of Origbo Meje Obas issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, following his viral claim that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, allegedly plotted to assassinate him.

The controversial statement, which circulated widely on social media, also accused the Ooni of allegedly “using his former wife” to orchestrate the plot. This development has not only unsettled the traditional council but has also raised concerns over the unity of Yoruba traditional institutions.

Akahi News gathered that the monarchs, led by the Salu of Edunabon, Oba Adesoji Kehinde, described the Oluwo’s actions as unbecoming of a traditional ruler, stressing that the constant outbursts had ridiculed the revered stool of Oduduwa.

Traditional Rulers Condemn Oluwo’s Conduct

In their strongly worded statement, the monarchs insisted that the throne of the Ooni remains the supreme traditional authority in Yorubaland, backed by historical precedence and archival records.

They expressed dismay that Oluwo frequently changes his self-styled titles — from Emir of Iwo to Alaafin of Iwo — allegedly for media attention. According to them, such behaviour undermines the dignity of Yoruba monarchy.

Quoting Oba Kehinde, Akahi News reports:

“We hereby give the Oluwo 21 days to substantiate his claims against the Ooni. Failure to do so will leave us with no choice but to take legal action against him at the expiration of this ultimatum.”

Legal and Cultural Implications

Analysts believe this feud could have far-reaching consequences for Yoruba traditional leadership if not swiftly resolved. The Ooni of Ife is historically regarded as the spiritual head of all Yoruba Obas, a position that has commanded respect across Nigeria and beyond.

Observers noted that the Oluwo’s controversial style has repeatedly drawn attention, but this latest outburst risks escalating tensions among traditional rulers. Some stakeholders have called for mediation to prevent the matter from degenerating into a prolonged royal crisis.
