Osun Residents Blame FG Over Seized LG Allocations, PDP Gains Popularity – GSI Survey

By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News

A new survey by Geopolitical Survey International (GSI) has revealed rising public anger in Osun State against the Federal Government and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the prolonged seizure of local government allocations.

The opinion poll, conducted between August 1 and 15 across nine federal constituencies, sampled 10,000 respondents – 60 percent women and 40 percent men – from major towns including Osogbo, Ile Ife, Ikirun, Iragbiji, Iwo, Ila Orangun, Ikire, Ejigbo, Ede, Ilesa, Odeomu, Ilobu, Esa Oke, Ipetumodu, and Kuta.

Women Worst Hit

Findings showed that women bear the heaviest brunt of the crisis, with 84 percent of respondents saying they have been the most negatively impacted by the federal government’s withholding of funds. Ten percent mentioned men, while six percent were undecided.

FG Blamed for Crisis

On accountability, 86 percent of respondents held the Federal Government responsible, describing the move as “illegal and unconstitutional.” Eleven percent blamed the state government, while three percent expressed indifference.

Political Implications

The survey suggests significant political consequences for the APC in Osun. About 87 percent of respondents vowed to vote against the party in future elections, while 85 percent declared support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if elections were held today. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) secured only two percent support.

According to GSI’s lead consultant, Dr. Adeyemo Adeyefa, the outcome indicates “solid home support for the state government in its encounter with the Federal Government” and reflects “the growing anger of indigenes and residents against the APC.”

He explained that the allocation seizure “has increased hardship for womenfolk in Osun State” and significantly eroded APC’s favourability. Notably, PDP’s acceptance jumped from 65 percent three months ago to nearly 85 percent in August.

“This outcome indicates that the APC strategy may have backfired, as the fund seizure has boosted the public appeal of the PDP and strengthened the state government’s support base,” Adeyefa added.

GSI, an Abuja-based opinion poll organisation, noted that this was its fifth survey on Osun public-related issues since January. Adeyefa assured that further refinements in methodology would continue to improve future research accuracy.
