Oyebanji Marks Historic Milestone as First Commercial Flight Lands at Ekiti Airport

Historic Takeoff for Ekiti Aviation

Ekiti State made history on Wednesday as Governor Biodun Oyebanji led dignitaries to receive the first commercial flight at the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport in Ado Ekiti. The United Nigeria aircraft, registration number 5N-BWY, arrived at 11:09 a.m. with about 50 passengers on board and departed for Lagos at noon.

Notable passengers included Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, three former Ekiti governors – Dr Kayode Fayemi, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, and Dr Ayodele Fayose – members of the National Assembly, the Chairman of United Nigeria Airline Prof Obiora Okonkwo, and aviation officials including the former Minister of Aviation Mr Babatola.

Investment and Infrastructure Goals

Governor Oyebanji disclosed that over N49.7 billion was expended on the airport project, describing it as a milestone for economic growth and enhanced connectivity. He highlighted the airport’s strategic design to support the export of agricultural produce, reduce post-harvest losses, and attract investors.

The Governor also commended his predecessors for their roles in the project, particularly Governor Fayemi, who laid the foundation, and Aare Afe Babalola (SAN) for donating navigational aids and control tower equipment worth $1.6 million, alongside the construction of a 100-car capacity car park at a cost of N356 million.

Governor Oyebanji urged entrepreneurs, farmers, and investors to utilise the airport to expand business, access new markets, and create wealth. He described the project as not merely a commercial flight launch but the beginning of a new chapter in transportation and economic development for the state.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, praised the Governor’s leadership and noted that the airport would enhance agricultural value chains, boost trade, and create new economic opportunities.
