The Symbolism of the Palm: Peace, Royalty and Restoration

At the heart of Palm Sunday lies the green palm, which Fr Odediran describes as a powerful symbol of peace. Referencing the prophetic vision of Christ as the Prince of Peace, he explains that the palm also signifies royalty and restoration.

However, beyond its beauty and celebration, the palm carries a deeper message about human inconsistency. The same crowd that joyfully welcomed Christ with shouts of “Hosanna” would, in a short time, demand His crucifixion.

Drawing a parallel with contemporary society, he likened the “Hosanna” of the crowd to political promises often made during elections. According to him, many leaders approach the people with appealing assurances, only to disappoint them after gaining power. Likewise, he noted that some voters, after selling their votes, later regret their actions when faced with harsh realities.

The Donkey: A Lesson in True Leadership

Another striking symbol explored in the reflection is the donkey on which Christ rode into Jerusalem. Fr Odediran described it as a representation of humility, pointing to the fulfilment of prophecy that the King would come not in grandeur, but in meekness.

He contrasted this with the modern display of arrogance, wealth, and power often associated with leadership today. While many rulers seek to project strength through opulence, Christ chose the path of humility, offering a timeless model of servant leadership.

What begins as a moment of celebration quickly unfolds into a painful journey of rejection and sacrifice. Yet, Fr Odediran emphasised that even in this apparent tragedy, God’s purpose remains intact.

Quoting Scripture, he reminded the faithful that in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him, assuring believers that divine control persists even in moments of suffering.

Christ’s Humanity and the Mystery of His Suffering

Reflecting further on the Passion, the priest highlighted the humanity of Jesus Christ, noting that He endured pain, rejection, and death like every other human being.
