Welcome to the Ember Months: Fr. Komolafe Offers September Blessings and Prayer for Protection

As Nigeria enters the final stretch of the year, Rev. Fr. Komolafe has welcomed the faithful into the ember months with a message of faith, hope, divine protection and renewed confidence in God.

In his September message, the Catholic priest drew inspiration from Psalm 91:1, which says: “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.”

The message comes as Christians and families across Nigeria begin the ember months — September, October, November and December — a period traditionally associated with the final months of the year and, in many communities, increased spiritual reflection, thanksgiving and preparation for Christmas.

A Message Against Fear and Despair

At the heart of Fr. Komolafe’s message is a prayer that fear and despair will not dominate the lives of people as they enter September.

He prayed that evil would not invade the homes or lives of those receiving the message, while declaring God’s protection over their daily activities.

The message also carries an encouragement for people who may be looking towards the remaining months of 2026 with uncertainty.

Rather than allowing anxiety about the future to take over, the prayer directs attention towards God’s protection and faithfulness.

Prayer for Divine Protection

One of the strongest themes in the message is divine protection.

Fr. Komolafe prayed that God’s presence would remain with the faithful in their coming and going, reflecting the biblical assurance of God’s care for those who place their trust in Him.

This is particularly meaningful during a period when many Nigerians continue to contend with economic difficulties, insecurity, uncertainty and other pressures of daily life.

The prayer reminds believers that, despite the circumstances around them, they can continue to place their hope in God.

A Prayer for Success and Favour

The message also extends beyond protection to include prayers for favour, success and the blessing of human efforts.

Fr. Komolafe declared that God would lift His people above their foes and crown their efforts with favour and success.

This portion of the message is particularly significant because September often represents a period when people begin to assess the progress they have made since the beginning of the year.

For some, it is a time to renew abandoned plans. For others, it is an opportunity to push harder towards personal, professional, academic, family and spiritual goals before the year comes to an end.

The prayer therefore serves as an encouragement not to give up.

Goodness and Mercy for the Remaining Months

The priest further prayed that goodness and mercy would accompany the faithful throughout September and the remaining months of the year.

The reference to goodness and mercy echoes the familiar biblical expression in Psalm 23, where the psalmist expresses confidence that God’s goodness and mercy will follow him.

It presents September not simply as another month on the calendar but as another opportunity to experience God’s faithfulness.

Understanding the Ember Months

The expression “ember months” is particularly popular in Nigeria and some other West African societies. It generally refers to the final four months of the year — September through December.

These months are often characterised by increased social activities, travelling, celebrations, religious programmes and preparations for the Christmas and New Year seasons.

For Christians, however, they can also be an appropriate period for deeper reflection, thanksgiving and renewed commitment to God.

Rather than approaching the period with fear because of unfortunate incidents sometimes associated with the ember months, believers can approach it with wisdom, prayer, vigilance and faith.

Akahi News Analysis

Fr. Komolafe’s September message carries a simple but powerful message: enter the ember months with faith rather than fear.

The prayer does not suggest that people should ignore the realities of life. Instead, it encourages believers to place their trust in God while continuing to live responsibly and wisely.

Faith should therefore be accompanied by practical responsibility.

As Nigerians enter September, people can use the remaining months of the year to review their goals, strengthen their families, improve their relationships with others, work diligently and deepen their relationship with God.

For Christians, the ember months can also become a period of thanksgiving — looking back at the challenges already overcome and recognising God’s blessings throughout the year.

The message from Fr. Komolafe is ultimately one of hope, protection, favour and perseverance.

As September begins, the prayer is that fear will give way to faith, despair will give way to hope, and uncertainty will give way to confidence in God’s providence.

May the new month bring peace to our homes, wisdom to our decisions, strength for our challenges and success in our legitimate endeavours.

Happy New Month, and welcome to the Ember Months!
