PDP Crisis Deepens as Wike’s Faction Pushes Consensus Candidates, Urges Ortom to Step Aside

Fresh Tensions Emerge Ahead of PDP National Convention

The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a new turn as a faction reportedly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, moves to consolidate control through a consensus arrangement for key national positions.

The development comes just days before the party’s scheduled national convention, intensifying divisions among stakeholders and raising fresh concerns about unity within the opposition party.

According to Akahi News, PDP governors have distanced themselves from the alleged consensus process, signalling potential legal and political battles ahead of the convention.

This raises a fundamental question: Can a political party truly unite through consensus when key stakeholders feel excluded?

Ortom Reportedly Asked to Drop Ambition

Sources within the Wike-aligned bloc indicate that former Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, has been urged to step aside from his ambition, as the faction backs alternative candidates for top party positions.

Under the reported arrangement, Senator Samuel Anyanwu is being positioned for the role of National Secretary, while Abdulrahman Mohammed is tipped for the position of National Chairman.

Akahi News gathered that the zoning formula underpinning the arrangement allocates the chairmanship to the North-Central and the secretary position to the South-East, in what insiders describe as a strategic balancing of interests.

Yet, another question emerges: Is zoning a tool for fairness—or a mechanism for elite negotiation?

Governors Reject Process, Threaten Legal Action

Despite the push for consensus, PDP governors have reportedly rejected the process, insisting that it lacks transparency and inclusiveness.

They are said to be considering legal options to challenge the outcome, arguing that party procedures must be respected to preserve internal democracy.

According to Akahi News, this resistance underscores the widening gap between different power blocs within the party, with each side seeking legitimacy ahead of the convention.

This leads to a deeper reflection: What defines democracy within a political party—agreement among elites or participation of the broader membership?

Consensus vs Contest: A Divided Approach

Supporters of the consensus arrangement argue that it is the most efficient way to avoid conflict, reduce costs, and ensure a smooth convention process.

A spokesperson aligned with the Wike faction defended the move, stating that consensus reflects agreement among stakeholders and helps prevent internal disputes that often arise from competitive primaries.

However, critics maintain that consensus can easily be perceived as imposition, particularly when not all factions are adequately represented.

Akahi News notes that the debate reflects a longstanding tension in Nigerian politics between pragmatism and democratic ideals.

This prompts another philosophical inquiry: Is peace within a political party more important than the process used to achieve it?

Zonal Arrangements and Strategic Calculations

The reported consensus framework extends across geopolitical zones, with various positions allocated to different states to maintain balance.

From the North-West to the South-South, stakeholders are said to have agreed on specific roles, reflecting an attempt to distribute influence and avoid regional discontent.

Religious considerations were also reportedly factored into the decision-making process, highlighting the complex interplay of identity, politics, and strategy in party affairs.

According to Akahi News, such calculations often shape leadership outcomes in Nigeria’s political landscape.

As the PDP prepares for its national convention, the struggle between consensus and contestation continues to define its internal dynamics. The outcome of this power tussle could determine not only the party’s leadership but also its future relevance as a major opposition force.

In the end, one question remains unavoidable: Can a divided party effectively challenge for power—or must it first win the battle within itself?
