The Forum of State Chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised alarm over what it described as a systematic campaign of intimidation and coercion by the All Progressives Congress (APC) targeted at PDP governors, senators, and lawmakers at both national and state levels.
In a strongly worded statement jointly signed by Dr. Tony Aziegbemi (Chairman) and Sir Edward Percy Masha (Secretary), the forum accused the ruling party of engaging in “undemocratic and desperate tactics” to weaken the opposition and tilt the nation toward a one-party system.
“APC’s Actions Are an Assault on Democracy” — PDP
According to the statement, the forum held a crucial meeting on Monday, October 14, 2025, at the PDP FCT Secretariat, Abuja, under the chairmanship of Sir Edward Percy Masha. The meeting focused on issues affecting party unity, preparations for the forthcoming National Elective Convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, and the general state of the opposition in Nigeria.
“The Forum strongly condemned the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its undemocratic, desperate, and systematic efforts to intimidate, harass, and coerce PDP leaders — including governors, senators, and members of the National and State Assemblies — into defecting,” the statement read.
The forum described such actions as “an assault on democracy”, warning that the ruling party’s behaviour represents a dangerous step toward creating a de facto one-party state, which Nigerians must collectively resist.
Sanctions for Indiscipline and Sabotage
The forum also addressed internal challenges within the PDP, particularly what it termed acts of sabotage allegedly orchestrated by certain members working in collaboration with external interests linked to the APC to derail the party’s upcoming convention.
Specifically, the forum condemned the actions of Hon. Austine Nwachukwu (Imo State) and Hon. Amah Abraham Nnana (Abia State), who reportedly sought a court injunction to stop the convention. Their conduct, the statement noted, amounted to a betrayal of trust and collective resolve within the party.
“Consequently, the forum resolved to suspend both members from the body and appointed Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the Edo State PDP, as the new Chairman of the PDP State Chairmen Forum,” it added.
Call for Unity and Resistance to Political Oppression
The PDP State Chairmen Forum reaffirmed its commitment to defending democratic values, strengthening internal discipline, and rebuilding the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The forum further urged all members and supporters of the PDP across the country to remain united, focused, and courageous in resisting external pressures and political intimidation.
Political observers note that this latest confrontation highlights the intensifying rivalry between the APC and PDP, as both parties gear up for the next electoral cycle — one that may determine the future shape of Nigeria’s democracy.
