According to the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect, identified as Mr. Bernard Odinchefu, aged 62, was taken into custody on 1st October 2025 by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad stationed in Awkuzu. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect coordinated illegal levies on traders in communities such as Isseke and Orsumoghu.

SP Ikenga revealed, “The suspect is reportedly in charge of collecting ₦10,000 and above monthly from traders and extorting sums exceeding ₦100,000 from families hosting burial ceremonies or similar events. These funds are allegedly remitted to his Commander in a terrorist camp.”

The arrest highlights the police’s commitment to curbing criminal enterprises that exploit community members for financial gain while supporting insurgent operations.

State Commissioner of Police Reaffirms Commitment

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reassured residents that the Command remains resolute in its fight against criminal elements and groups attempting to destabilise the State. He emphasised that the arrest of Odinchefu is part of a broader strategy to dismantle networks linked to insurgent and extremist activities.

CP Orutugu stated, “Our officers are working tirelessly to ensure that Anambra is free from elements that seek to intimidate and exploit law-abiding citizens. This arrest is a clear message that criminality under the guise of agitation or secession will not be tolerated.”

Context of the Extortion Activities

Investigations indicate that the suspect had allegedly been operating for months, systematically collecting extortion fees from unsuspecting traders and families. The methods used reportedly involved intimidation and coercion, leaving victims with little choice but to comply. Experts suggest that such networks often finance wider criminal operations, including weapons acquisition and logistical support for insurgent activities in the region.

Security analysts note that the apprehension of informants like Odinchefu is critical in curbing the financial lifelines that enable secessionist and insurgent groups to operate with impunity. By targeting middle-tier operators, law enforcement can disrupt the flow of resources and weaken organised criminal structures.

Broader Implications for Community Safety

The arrest has been welcomed by residents in Ihiala and surrounding communities, who have long complained about harassment and illegal levies. Local traders reportedly expressed relief that the police are taking concrete steps to protect livelihoods and ensure safety.

Community leaders have urged sustained vigilance, noting that while this arrest is a step forward, continued cooperation between citizens and law enforcement is essential to prevent the re-emergence of such networks.

Ongoing Investigations

The suspect remains in police custody as further investigations continue. Authorities are expected to interrogate Odinchefu extensively to uncover the full scope of the network, identify other operatives, and trace the channels through which illicit funds are transferred to insurgent groups.

Observers believe that successful prosecution and thorough intelligence gathering will not only serve justice but also send a strong deterrent signal to others considering similar criminal undertakings.

The Anambra State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding residents and dismantling criminal networks exploiting citizens under false pretences. With ongoing operations and community cooperation, the State is gradually reinforcing its security framework against both criminal and insurgent threats.
