Manchester Synagogue Attack: Suspect Identified as Jihad al-Shamie, British-Syrian National
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
A tragic act of violence struck Manchester, England, on Thursday as a man attacked a synagogue during Yom Kippur, leaving two dead and three others injured. Britain’s counterterrorism authorities have identified the assailant as Jihad al-Shamie, 35, a British citizen of Syrian descent. Police shot him dead minutes after the assault began.

The attack unfolded at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation, situated in the heart of Manchester’s Orthodox Jewish community. The assailant initially rammed a car into worshippers outside the synagogue before exiting the vehicle and stabbing multiple victims with a knife. Security personnel and members of the congregation prevented him from entering the building during morning prayers.
Authorities confirmed that a vest worn by the attacker, initially suspected to be an explosive device, was incapable of detonating. Investigators are still probing the motivation behind the attack, while three other individuals—two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s—remain in custody on suspicion of terrorism-related offences, including preparation, instigation, and commission.

The incident has sent shockwaves through Manchester’s Jewish community and triggered heightened security measures at Jewish sites across the United Kingdom. Officials emphasised the terrorist nature of the attack, noting the timing on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar and the deliberate targeting of a place of worship.
Video footage circulating on social media captured the harrowing moments of the attack, further highlighting the bravery of bystanders and security staff who intervened to prevent greater loss of life. The attack has sparked widespread condemnation across communities and renewed debates on security for religious minorities in the UK.
