Ajaokuta Steel Revival: Hope or Political Rhetoric? Experts and Lawmakers Weigh In
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News

The long-dormant Ajaokuta Steel Company is once again in the spotlight as Hon. Sanni Egidi AbdulRaheem, the House of Representatives member representing Ajaokuta Federal Constituency, assured Nigerians of the plant’s imminent revival. Speaking in his 65th Independence Day statement, AbdulRaheem described the renewed push to restore the steel complex as a crucial step towards economic transformation, industrialisation, and youth employment in Kogi State and beyond.

According to AbdulRaheem, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has taken bold steps, including the creation of the Federal Ministry of Steel Development, appointing a Kogi-born technocrat as its first minister, and designating a substantive Managing Director for Ajaokuta Steel Company. The lawmaker praised the appointees for demonstrating capacity and commitment to industrial revival, highlighting the President’s dedication to turning the project into a driver of economic growth.

“This is more than steel production; it represents hope, empowerment, and the potential for an industrial renaissance for our people,” AbdulRaheem stated, urging citizens to remain patient and optimistic.

Divergent Views: Public Skepticism and Criticism

While government officials remain optimistic, Nigerians on social media platforms such as Nairaland expressed scepticism, citing decades of failed promises. Many users noted that Ajaokuta Steel, along with other national industrial projects like refineries and the Warri-Itakpe railway, has been “moribund” for over 50 years. Comments highlighted concerns about outdated technology, high operational costs, and political interference as persistent barriers.

User Omihanifa remarked: “Any attempt to revive that place is tantamount to trying to wake up a corpse of more than 50 years.” Others, like zoedew, emphasised the need for private sector involvement, suggesting that entrepreneurs such as Aliko Dangote might successfully manage the project. Conversely, some expressed frustration, accusing politicians of using the revival rhetoric as a pretext for looting public funds.

Dangote’s Perspective and Industrial Reality

AbdulRaheem’s statement also addressed recent remarks allegedly made by Aliko Dangote, who reportedly described Ajaokuta Steel as a “graveyard.” The lawmaker condemned the comments as disrespectful, insisting the project symbolizes Nigeria’s industrial potential. Meanwhile, discussions among experts and social media users have highlighted the urgent need for technological overhaul, strategic investments, and a sustainable operational model to avoid repeating past failures.

State Government Support and Security Measures

Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo received praise from AbdulRaheem for facilitating security around the steel complex and creating a conducive environment for host communities. Analysts suggest that government alignment at both state and federal levels is crucial for any meaningful industrial revival.

Path to Industrial Renaissance

Observers note that reviving Ajaokuta Steel could position Nigeria as a regional industrial hub. AbdulRaheem reaffirmed his commitment to representing the voices of Ajaokuta constituents in policy decisions, underscoring the broader national benefits of the project. However, the prevailing debate among Nigerians highlights that successful revival depends on addressing technology gaps, ensuring transparency, and fostering genuine public-private partnerships.

Akahi News gathered that the ongoing discussions reflect both hope and scepticism. While government officials stress renewed political will and strategic planning, many citizens remain cautious, remembering decades of unfulfilled promises. The coming months, including post-summit follow-ups and investment proposals, are expected to be pivotal in determining whether Ajaokuta Steel will finally live up to its historical potential.

The story of Ajaokuta Steel embodies the delicate balance between political ambition, public expectation, and industrial reality in Nigeria’s quest for economic diversification.
