Portuguese Man Dies in Tragic Accident After Partner Falls on Him

A 59-year-old man in Portugal has died in what police have described as a freak accident after his partner lost her balance and fell on top of him in their home.

The incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday morning in Campanha, a residential district on the outskirts of Porto. According to local reports, the victim, described as slight in build, was lying on the floor beside the bed when his partner, a year older and weighing over 100kg (15st), stumbled while trying to reach him.
Neighbours were alerted by the woman’s distressed screams after she became trapped between the bed and the wall. Despite their swift intervention, lifting her off the victim with the help of several men, the man was already unconscious when emergency services arrived. Firefighters and paramedics attempted resuscitation, but he was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering cardiac arrest.
Portuguese daily Correio da Manhã reported that five men were needed to move the woman, whose weight was a significant factor in her inability to get up. Police have ruled out foul play, confirming the death as “accidental asphyxia” resulting from the fall.
A source close to the investigation said: “It’s obviously a very unusual death but there was no criminal intent. It was simply a tragic stumble.” The woman, who had lived with the deceased for several years in a common-law partnership, is receiving grief counselling.
This tragedy comes shortly after another major incident in Portugal, where six people, including four members of a British family, died in a road accident while on holiday.
