President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the Federal University of Health and Medical Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State, in honour of the late Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.

Akahi News gathered that the President made the announcement during a condolence visit to the family of Sheikh Dahiru, who passed away on November 27, 2025, at the age of 98.
University Gets New Name
According to the President, the institution will henceforth be known as Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University, a decision he said was aimed at immortalising the revered cleric’s legacy and lifelong contributions to faith, education, and national unity.
“From today onwards, I will announce this change of name to immortalise him,” President Tinubu said. “From Federal University of Health and Medical Sciences, Azare-Bauchi will from today be known as Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University. May God bless his memory.”

Akahi News learnt that the announcement was received with deep appreciation by family members, religious leaders, and community stakeholders present during the visit.
Honouring a Towering Religious Figure
Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential Islamic scholars, known for decades of religious teaching, scholarship, and mentorship that cut across generations.
Observers noted that the decision to rename a federal institution after him reflects the Federal Government’s recognition of his moral influence and enduring impact on society. Akahi News gathered that many see the move as a symbolic bridge between education, spirituality, and national heritage.
Symbolism and National Significance
Analysts believe the renaming of the university goes beyond symbolism, positioning the institution as a lasting monument to values such as discipline, learning, humility, and service to humanity, which the late scholar embodied.
According to reports monitored by Akahi News, the move has also sparked conversations on preserving the legacies of notable Nigerians through educational institutions, particularly those who shaped minds and morals without holding political office.
Condolence Visit and Prayers
During the condolence visit, President Tinubu prayed for the repose of Sheikh Dahiru’s soul and urged the family and followers of the late cleric to uphold his teachings of peace, tolerance, and devotion.
As Akahi News observed, the renaming announcement has since drawn reactions from across religious and academic circles, many describing it as a fitting tribute to a life devoted to God and humanity.
