Russia Launches “Bion-M” №2 Satellite With Mice, Flies and Plants for Space Research

Russia has successfully launched its latest biological research satellite, Bion-M №2, carrying dozens of living organisms into orbit in a mission designed to deepen scientific understanding of how space affects life.

On board the hermetically sealed satellite are 75 mice, 1,500 flies, medicinal plants, algae, microorganisms, seeds, as well as root cells from both humans and animals. According to scientists, this unique mix of biological samples will allow them to study the effects of cosmic radiation and Earth’s geomagnetic field on living organisms in greater detail than ever before.

Soyuz Rocket Achieves Swift Launch

Akahi News learnt that the Bion-M №2 was launched using the Soyuz-2.1b rocket, which reached orbit in just 9 minutes and 23 seconds. Researchers hailed the launch as a technical success, highlighting the rocket’s stability and reliability in placing the satellite into cosmic orbit.

The satellite will remain in space for 30 days, during which continuous monitoring and experiments will be conducted to gather vital data for future long-term human space travel.

Building on Decades of Space Biology Missions

The Bion programme has a long history dating back to 1973. Between then and 1996, Russia launched 11 earlier Bion satellites carrying monkeys, mice, bats, guppies, insects and even single-celled organisms. These pioneering missions laid the foundation for today’s advanced research.

Now, with the launch of Bion-M №2, scientists hope to expand the scope of biological experiments in space, studying not only how animals and plants respond to zero-gravity and radiation, but also how different cell structures adapt to the space environment.
