Shock as Two Enugu Teenagers Allegedly Paid ₦50,000 to Kidnap Baby

By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News

Two teenagers in Enugu State have been arrested after allegedly attempting to kidnap a neighbour’s baby in exchange for a ₦50,000 reward promised by an accomplice.

According to details sighted on Nairaland and confirmed by eyewitness accounts, the boys, aged 10 and 17, reportedly used a master key, commonly referred to as an “Ashawo key,” to break into their neighbour’s apartment through the balcony while believing the mother was asleep.

However, the baby’s mother, identified as Mrs Jennifer Munachi Michael, came out of the bathroom at the moment of intrusion and raised an alarm. Neighbours rushed to the scene, while the boys attempted to lie that they only wanted to play with the child and explore the house.

Confession and Arrests

When Mrs Michael’s husband returned home, soldiers were involved, and under questioning, the boys allegedly confessed that a man they called “Brother” had promised them ₦50,000 if they could deliver a live baby. They also revealed he provided the key used in the attempted crime.

The two teenagers and their mother were detained at a military barracks. By the following day, the alleged mastermind — the so-called “Brother” — was reportedly tracked and apprehended. While community elders pleaded for leniency, the matter escalated further when Mrs Michael’s husband insisted on pursuing legal action.

Community Response

Akahi News gathered that all tenants in the compound have since changed their locks, and the caretaker has issued a quit notice to the boys’ family, citing security fears. Meanwhile, Mrs Michael and her family are also planning to relocate by January due to safety concerns.

Local residents have condemned the disturbing trend of minors being lured into crime for financial gain. Analysts told Akahi News that the incident highlights the urgent need for stronger child protection measures and community vigilance.

Legal and Emotional Fallout

The case has stirred heated debate, particularly as Mrs Michael, a mother who previously struggled with conception, has vowed not to forgive or let the matter slide. Lawyers have reportedly been engaged, signalling that prosecution may follow.

As the case develops, Akahi News will continue to provide updates.
