Shock in Anambra: Father Chains Son Indoors for Five Years in Igbukwu
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
Residents of Igbukwu, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, are reeling in shock after the discovery of a young man who was allegedly chained and confined indoors by his own father for five years. The disturbing revelation has sparked outrage, debate, and calls for urgent intervention by rights groups and local authorities.

A Shocking Discovery
According to eyewitnesses, the young man was found in August 2025 after concerned youths of the community stormed his father’s compound following a tip-off. To their horror, they discovered him chained by both hands and legs, emaciated, and confined within the house since 2021.
The man, despite his frail appearance, was able to speak clearly. He told the rescuers that he had been held against his will and had not bathed or seen the outside world for five years.
What made the discovery even more shocking was that the father had reportedly been telling neighbours and community members that his son had travelled to China on a business trip, a story that kept suspicions at bay for years.
Father’s Defence and Community Reactions
When confronted, the father allegedly claimed he took the extreme step because his son had repeatedly threatened to kill him. According to him, chaining the young man was an act of self-defence, not punishment.
This justification, however, has deeply divided the community. While a handful of residents argue that the father may have acted out of fear, the majority condemned the act as a gross violation of human dignity and basic human rights.
A local youth leader who witnessed the rescue described the scene as “heartbreaking and unacceptable,” adding that the man looked “malnourished, humiliated, and broken.”
Calls for Investigation and Justice
Human rights groups and child protection advocates have called on law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure justice is served. They insist that regardless of the father’s claims, the act constitutes abuse, neglect, and unlawful confinement, offences punishable under Nigerian law.
The case, they argue, also highlights the need for greater community vigilance, as years of secrecy and misinformation enabled the father to conceal the ordeal.
Abuse or Self-Defence?
The tragic incident has sparked heated discussions both within and outside the community about the thin line between discipline, protection, and outright abuse. Many Nigerians online and offline have described the act as barbaric, insisting that even in cases of mental health struggles or domestic conflict, no one deserves to be chained and stripped of their humanity.
As investigations are expected to begin, the residents of Igbukwu — and indeed the wider public — are left grappling with a haunting question:
Where should society draw the line between self-defence and abuse?
