Prominent activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has lambasted Nigerian governors and political officeholders who took to social media to post farewell messages to President Bola Tinubu as he travelled abroad for medical attention.

In a scathing remark shared on his verified social media pages, Sowore described the action as “the most foolish display of idleness and sycophancy” by public officials who, in his words, “abandon the duties they were elected or appointed to perform, just to wave at an equally irresponsible president being flown abroad for steroid injections to stay alive.”

Sowore’s Scathing Criticism

Sowore, known for his blunt and unapologetic criticism of Nigeria’s political class, expressed outrage that governors who are expected to tackle pressing challenges in their states—ranging from insecurity to economic hardship—could “waste taxpayers’ resources and valuable time on meaningless ceremonies” instead of working for the people.

“The most foolish set of people,” Sowore wrote, “are these grown but useless politicians who neglect their official responsibilities just to display loyalty to a leader who continues to fail Nigerians.”

Public Reactions and Wider Concerns

Akahi News gathered that Sowore’s criticism mirrors growing public frustration with Nigeria’s political elite, particularly over their perceived indifference to the suffering of ordinary citizens. Social media users have repeatedly questioned why such officials devote energy to photo opportunities and public displays of loyalty rather than delivering concrete results.

Analysts note that the practice of political aides and governors converging at airports to bid farewell or welcome presidents has long been condemned as a wasteful culture inherited from previous administrations.

Sowore’s Consistent Stand on Governance

This is not the first time Sowore has taken on the political establishment. Over the years, he has criticised both ruling and opposition parties for what he calls “decades of looting, incompetence, and shameless propaganda.” His latest comment, however, has reignited debates about the priorities of elected officials in a country grappling with worsening economic realities.
