Suspected bandits have attacked Zurak community in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing at least five residents and a soldier in a violent assault that has further heightened insecurity in the area.
The attack reportedly occurred on Monday at about 3:00 pm, with sources confirming that three soldiers are still missing following a gun battle with the attackers.
Communities Overrun, Houses Burnt
According to local accounts, the armed bandits had earlier invaded Sabon Gari community, where they set several houses ablaze before proceeding to Zurak.
Akahi News gathered that the attackers also looted shops, carting away food items and other valuables, leaving residents in panic and distress.
Youth Leader Confirms Casualties
Confirming the incident, Shapi’i Sambo, a youth leader in Wase, said the attack resulted in multiple deaths, including that of a soldier who was part of security forces deployed to the area.
He added that the body of the slain soldier has since been moved to Jos, the Plateau State capital.
Residents Flee as Fear Grips Communities
A resident of Zak community, Jibrin Isa, described the situation as devastating, noting that fear has forced residents to abandon their homes.
“This incident is devastating, and Zurak community is currently deserted as residents have fled to neighboring villages for fear of further attacks,” Isa said.
Akahi News learnt that many families are now taking refuge in nearby communities, uncertain of when it will be safe to return.
Rising Insecurity in Wase LGA
The latest attack is part of a broader wave of banditry and kidnapping that has plagued Wase Local Government Area in recent months. On December 21, 2025, no fewer than 28 travellers were reportedly abducted along a major route in the area.
Security concerns have continued to grow, with residents lamenting what they describe as repeated attacks and insufficient protection.
Calls for Government Intervention
Community leaders and residents have called on the Plateau State Government and federal security agencies to urgently intervene and restore law and order in the area.
Observers say the recurring violence underscores the need for sustained security operations and community-based intelligence to curb banditry and protect vulnerable rural populations.
