Tambuwal’s Arrest Politically Motivated, Says Sokoto PDP

Tambuwal’s Arrest Politically Motivated, Says Sokoto PDP
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has condemned the arrest of former governor and current Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing the development as a clear case of political persecution aimed at silencing opposition voices in the country.

The party, in a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, insisted that Tambuwal’s detention was not only unwarranted but also part of a larger agenda allegedly orchestrated by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to weaken the PDP ahead of future elections.

Party Alleges Targeted Political Witch-Hunt

According to the Sokoto PDP, the EFCC’s action was not borne out of genuine anti-corruption intent but rather a calculated move to tarnish the reputation of one of its most influential leaders. The party accused the APC-led federal government of weaponising state institutions, particularly the EFCC, to clamp down on perceived political threats.

“We see this as a deliberate act to intimidate our party and its leaders. Senator Tambuwal has always been a vocal advocate for democracy, transparency, and good governance. His arrest under spurious allegations is nothing but a political witch-hunt designed to silence him,” the statement read.

The PDP further noted that Tambuwal, who served as governor of Sokoto State for eight years and later as Speaker of the House of Representatives, has consistently been a thorn in the side of the ruling party, particularly for his refusal to join the APC despite sustained political pressure.

Atiku Abubakar Weighs In

The condemnation from Sokoto PDP comes on the heels of a similar outcry from former Vice President and PDP presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar. In a statement released via his media team, Atiku described Tambuwal’s arrest as “politically motivated” and alleged that it was part of a broader strategy to coerce opposition leaders into defecting to the APC.

According to Atiku, the EFCC’s selective approach to fighting corruption, where opposition figures are swiftly targeted while allies of the ruling party are overlooked, poses a grave threat to the credibility of Nigeria’s anti-corruption institutions.

“It is obvious that the current administration is more interested in scoring political points than in genuinely fighting corruption. The EFCC should not be reduced to an instrument of intimidation against those who refuse to toe the government’s line,” Atiku warned.

EFCC Yet to Respond to Allegations

At the time of this report, the EFCC has not issued a detailed public statement addressing the PDP’s claims of political bias. However, sources within the commission maintain that the arrest is linked to an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities during Tambuwal’s tenure as governor.

Legal experts, however, note that without transparent processes and equal treatment of all political actors, public trust in the EFCC’s work could be severely undermined.

Concerns Over Democratic Integrity

Political observers warn that the frequent use of law enforcement agencies in what appears to be partisan battles could further erode Nigeria’s democratic framework. Human rights groups have also expressed concern that high-profile arrests, if perceived as politically motivated, risk discouraging political dissent and entrenching authoritarian tendencies.

A Sokoto-based political analyst, Malam Bashir Ibrahim, told Akahi News that the EFCC’s actions, whether justified or not, are being widely interpreted through a political lens. “In a highly polarised environment like Nigeria’s, timing is everything. Arresting a prominent opposition figure without clear and publicly accessible evidence naturally fuels suspicions of political bias,” he said.

Tambuwal’s Political Journey and Influence

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal remains one of Nigeria’s most experienced politicians, having served as a lawmaker, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and two-term governor before winning a Senate seat in 2023. He is widely regarded as a strategic political operator with considerable grassroots influence, particularly in the North-West region.

His political career has been marked by significant national engagements, including his role in brokering peace within party factions and championing electoral reforms. These qualities have made him both an asset to the PDP and a formidable opponent to the ruling APC.

PDP Vows to Resist Political Intimidation

The Sokoto PDP vowed to resist any attempt to intimidate or weaken the party ahead of the next general elections. The statement concluded with a call to all PDP members and supporters nationwide to remain united and vigilant in the face of what it described as “ongoing attempts to dismantle Nigeria’s democracy.”

“We will not be cowed by these underhand tactics. The people of Sokoto and indeed Nigerians know the truth. We stand firmly with Senator Tambuwal and will continue to fight against all forms of political repression,” the party declared.

Looking Ahead

As the controversy surrounding Tambuwal’s arrest continues to unfold, political watchers say the incident will likely deepen partisan tensions and shape the tone of political engagements in the months ahead. Whether the EFCC can convincingly demonstrate the legitimacy of its actions without the stain of political interference remains to be seen.

For now, the arrest has become yet another flashpoint in Nigeria’s complex interplay between politics and anti-corruption enforcement, underscoring the need for institutional independence and the protection of democratic freedoms.
